Default HZ Super Cub finally (almost) done!

I've been repainting my HZ SC for a while now. Its finally ready for flight. Still have a couple of details to do, though.

Nice! I did my S Cub in yellow and I think that a military color scheme is just as nice!
OK, what is up with those ailerons? I cut mine out from the end of the wing almost all the way to the fuse and there still is not much roll rate. I also flattened the wing so the dihedral wouldn't/shouldn't fight the ailerons. I moved the connector all the way to the lowest hole and all it did was make it twitchy, even with expo. Yours look like you cut out the spot and used a piece of ??? to make new longer ailerons. Hmmmm does that work well?

Yes, I am happy with the ailerons. First, I tried cutting the ailerons out of the wing and using the foam. Very poor response. I trashed those and replaced them with 13" x 1.75" balsa. It made a huge difference.

OK, so I presume it is fairly thick balsa and you used what for hinges? I have CA hinges as well as some nice small pin hinges. Hmmmm, now you have me thinking.

I have several planes that don't get flown much, 2 that need maidened, and a Eflite RV9 due here today. Better put the re-aileroning on the back burner. BUT, thanks for the info and when the weather does get bad, I will have a project.

I believe the balsa was 1/4" thick. I sanded it to taper from the wing to the trailing edge of the aileron. I've used a couple of different kinds of hinges. First, I had the nylon hinges with a metal pin. Now I have nylon hinges that have a thinner, um, hinge part.

The ones I have are very small, so they would fit into fairly thin balsa. The good thing about those is that they shouldn't allow the aileron to be "loose" and flop around like CA hinges MIGHT do. Thanks for the info. OH, did you flatten your wing? I did the heat and heavy object on top of it method. Took a few sessions to get it done, but it worked very well for anyone that might want to flatten a foam wing.

edit : I looked at your photos again and I see you did flatten your wing.

Yes, but I just cut the center section out of the wing, then inserted a carbon fiber tube and glued the wings back together. It was kind of nerve-racking trying to make sure the wings went back together perfectly, but it worked out.

Thanks, guys. I'd love to video the maiden, but I only have a GoPro. The cub can handle the weight of it well, but I'm nervous about hanging it on for the first flight since redoing it.

Of course, we have winds gusting 30 to 40 mph today. I'm hoping that they will die down enough toward evening.

Ahh yes those pesky winds. I know them so well. Hope they die down for you, I a woke hoping to fly this morning as well but as the sun comes up a long with the winds. You should try getting just an every day video camera so you do not have to have the weight of the go pro on your plane. Maybe the lovely wife would enjoy filming If not you must have extensive details to how it flies.

Happy flying may your crashes be limited and if they are not limited let them be cool.

I'll give it a shot with my digital camera. Winds are still steady 5-10 gusting to 20+. I've flown the cub with no problems in winds like this, but I'm not going to risk it!

I'm taking the Wild Hawk out to play in the wind as soon as the battery charges.
