I have also thought about that very same thing. You could use some sort of heating element and ram air, but I would be affraid my plane would look like a Japanese Zero at the Mariana's Turkey Shoot, Too much smoke and flames going down in a hurry only to become a splat mark on the windshield of Mother Earth.

I had a big smoke trail coming out of one of my electric airplanes.
It only lasted for a little while and then the plane became a glider. Cost me about $15 for 10 seconds of smoke. ( Too big a prop ) |

I have a coulpe of old Goofy Grape and Looney Lime smoke granades, with a date stamp of 1968. They would put out some serious smoke now, Are they produce heat when opened??? I have been saving them for years, for something.

One key parameter required- do you want to make smoke and stay within the confines of what the AMA says is acceptable, or is the field 'wide open', as they say?

AMA rules on smoke:

Exceptions: - Free Flight fuses or devices that burn producing smoke and are securely attached to the model aircraft during flight. from: http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/105.PDF |

Which makes it sound to me as though a very inefficient and smoky rocket engine is fair game.

I look at it this way- if you fly at an AMA field, and expect to be covered by AMA insurance should something go wrong, the rules are da rules.

I was just trying to delineate the two options (AMA sanctioned, and not) because it changes the landscape on what you can use so drastically, I'm not one of those folks who recoil in shock and horror if you equip your plane with rockets and bombs and EMP weapons, as long as you use good judgement in where and when and in front of whom you enjoy it all.
Heck, you're talking to a guy that likes to fill a 30 gallon trash bag with an acetylene-oxygen mix... Dave |

Strike a spark and it's like a nuke going off... incredible purple flash, and in the Hudson valley region good for about 10 seconds worth of echoes.
Yet, almost no destructive power, and no evidence. Dave |

If it doesn't get hot enough to be called a 'pyrotechnic' that looks like it would even be AMA compatible.

Actually, looks like the link mentioned
http://www.rcsmoke.com/ is Regin, who makes a lot of the HVAC smoke products sold at Granger and others. Dave |
