Default Electric Bicycles Magazine Asking Advice

Well, www.ElectricBicyclesMagazine.com hardly got launched when it suffered a major computer crash. It has now recovered and even added some new articles. Example: "How to Install Hall Sensors". At EBM we make no pretense of being the big experts, so would appreciate any advice the folks on this site might have in ways to improve the magazine. We are especially in need of article ideas.

I keep wondering how long before the govt. steps in on electric bikes?
If they get to efficient, or popular they will get smashed under regulations like everything else...
I would like to see something with a 40 mile range ....

Looks good David. I don't know much about electric bikes - sorry!

Also we use sensor-less controllers for many years now. So we will have to find some old-timers for you.

Best of luck.

Got a question:
If you've got an old brushless motor with hall effect sensors, will an off the shelf Castle Creations ESC with sensorless controls run that old motor? Just don't connect the sensors. I've a suspicion it might just work.

They are making some BIG brushless rc airplane motors now, all they need are the three wires off the motor hooked to a speed control. The big speed controls are where you drop the cash, and I am not sure how they will handle the amps of a bike load...

have you seen stuff like this?

Looks like some of the info right on the site voids warranty on bikes etc.....

reading the comments below ( at Hobby King ) is a start for info on any item...

I bet you are right as the contollers now just just the emf feedback from the windings/magnets right?

Exactly.

I've done a lot of work with those little Microchip "PicChips" over the years, including building a number of brush type ESC's for my old Astroflight brush type motors. One of them controlled an Astroflight brush type geared 90 motor, pulling some 35 Amps on 38 Nicad cells.

But the software programming involved with those brushless motors is way over my head.

If you're wondering how those brushless ESC's work, take a look:
