Default E-flite Piper Pawnee

I am thinking about getting the Piper Pawnee and am courious on what the flaps do to the flight of the plane.

The basic question......what are the flaps used for?

Thanks!

mtuhoop24They help you land slower by increasing wing-lift, First used on the Air corps pea-shooter fighter in the 30's, I've used them on several BIG gassers I have(but don't fly anymore) I plan to put some on my new twin as she lands at 20 knots as she's a bit heavy (3Lbs -53 3/8"wingspan), That piper one good look'in bird,She probably doesn't need flaps for landing but they'll be fun for slow fly-bys an such, your bub stevecooper

They will also let you descend at a steeper rate without gaining too much airspeed.

mtuhoop24, D Payne has it right. The primary purpose of flaps is to increase drag.
Secondary is increase lift.
Increased lift reduces need for a higher angle of attack to produce the same lift.
Stall speed reduces.

BUT

If you fly at a speed lower than normal to take advantage of the lower stall speed, you run the risk of stalling.

You don't have an airspeed indicator, so knowing actual airspeed is a guess.

The extra drag can cause the plane to slow at a faster rate than without flaps.

So the flaps don't cause the plane to stall, the new lift temps you into slowing lower than you should and that can lead to a stall.

Try them, they're fun.
Keep the nose down on approach until you get used to them and experiment.

It is a great looking plane I got it on friday at my LHS for 119.00.
It has a nice big 62 inch wing. I used the e-flite 25 bl motor and 40 amp pro switched speed controll. I am running two 2100 3 cell thunder power li-pos in paralell. If you like scale planes this one is sweet. If you do want the flaps be aware you do have to cut them out. it is pretty easy though.check out the pics. I will post maiden results as soon as the weather breaks.

I got this bird up in the air for it's maiden. Fles real nice very stable with full flap deployment no bad habits and no ballooning. flys scale. I added 20% rudder mix on the ailerons to help kick the tail around.

Must not have sold well enough for a second production run. Too bad, but I do applaud E-Flite for offering unique models like this one. I guess the lesson is if you like it, don't wait too long to buy it.

Which reminds me, that Beechcraft Staggerwing sure does look nice

Default Pawnee

How lucky am I? The family of a long-time member of our club, who had passed away, donated a large amount RC stuff to the club. Among the items, many of them brand new, was an E-Flite Pawnee. I expressed an interest in it and was offered to buy it for $50.00. I hope to be able to get it together for SEFF.

Default Pawnee Power System

I am getting ready to build this one, but I have a question...What is everyone's take on using a UBEC or separate receiver battery? It just seems safer for the control surfaces to have their own battery. Also, would using a UBEC shorten flight time by drawing power from the motor battery?

A separate BEC or LiFe battery is what I use on these larger models. They work well. I have been very happy with the LiFe packs. Make sure your servos are rated for 5 cell NiMh/NiCad packs.

Default Crop dusting System

I'll bet someone has already done this. I was thinking about devising a scale crop dust system to work on this plane. Anyone everheard of it being done?

sure thing I did! Powder on a funny shaped dispenser. It needed to be shaken to unload properly. An auxiliary propeller (perhaps drop-activated only when the system is in use?) could do this shaking AND sucking it out.
Put your imagination to fly. I will see if I find the link, k?
Have a great week!
