I ran into a freind at the LHS and he brought me a kit to work on for the cost of 15 bucks all I need is the electronics to match. So I figured why not at least with some sorta plans I can at least say well it did not fly because I did this wrong in the build rather than guessing. I will post sme pics as it goes along just ordered my Rx etc today. Wish me luck. |

Here is the link to the thread on Rc Groups. I know the guy who made up the plane build and the he let me fly it yesterday which was real exciting.

Nice video it looks light and flys well ,looks like a good build. I have built a couple polaris sea planes but i dont count that as a foam scratch build. I have plans templets and instructions so it was to easy. Build it light fishbonez once you add motor wirering and batteries and reciever they get heavy fast. joe

Yes they do which was the problem with the original build it just became to heavy. I purchased the exact Rx motor and battery etc he recommended for his. So I have cheated a bit not from scratch but hey Im still learning right

My solent took a year to build but i would not change a thing i did ,I thought it out and then put it together ,it,s easyer to change your mind than it is tear your plane apart and start over again so take your time and keep things straight and level and once your mind is made up then cut it and glue it together with no gaps . It still is a scratch build because there is no kit and you are cutting all your own parts . Good luck and stick with it , joe

Well due to my lousy soldering skills and to some confusion I had to stop here I have a couple of questions for the original designer of this plane but we did get the motor mounted and the ESC temporarily in place. I also just realized i do not have the correct end connector for the battery to ESC so off the LHS hopefully for the right one.

Well she is ready for a cowl and canapy I am going to try to put that on tonight usng a water bottle and then we shall see what happens. I can not maiden her with my Tx ecause still at Horizon but I think my friend will be willing to Bind it to his Tx and we will keep our fingers crossed for a maiden flight later this week |

Did not come out quite as planned but... I wish I had a canopy looks kinda silly without one but my original idea did not work and the front end looks a bit funky looks like i tried to drink beer and make something from an X-wing, after a bit sanding and some glue to dry and a sticker or 2, all in all I dont think she looks to shabby for a first attempt to make a foamie. Needs a Tx of course and one of those pesky o-ring type bands for the motor all of which my friend AugerN from RC groups said he can hook me up with until later. Soooo with that said I am going to try to maiden her either tomorrow or as late as next weekend. We shall see how AugerNs schedule works, I plan to let him fly while I film it so I can see how good or bad it does as soon as that is complete I will post it here. for all to rip me up with. I am sure I willget ribbing either way

Fishbonez i think you did well for your first build, i wish you could have seen my first balsa built plane .It looked like someone through a bunch of balsa in big trash bag because the covering was so loose.lol
I think you are learning more every time you pick up the glue or the exacto knife to cut and sand things .I would never ripp anyone that builds anything because most out there wont even try. Keep up the great work fishbonez . joe

Well she has yet to fly I may be able to go for it this afternoon we shall see. I dont mind good ole fashioned ripping or constructive critisicm. I am not sure building is something I am ready for. I do not have a very steady hand for cutting, some of that is due to foam and sometimes I am not sure what to do and I stare at it and say nope it wont fly a good example is the delta wing I tried to build and just had to scrap, However I did enjoy building it and I would like to build a polaris so we will see

Well a couple of things first of al I did not realize I put elevons backwards. I just learned that the angle side is not for aerodynamics but for the hinges and Ihad not hooked the horns on correctly to the servos not quite right they would have fallen right out. Live and learn glad I did not get her off yet I would have been very disapointed to see her smashed in the first few seconds so...

OK I think I have worked out all the bugs moved the servos flipped the wings around to face the correct direction and added a sticker or two just for the heck of it. My Tx is due from Horizon on Monday. So hopefully a maiden flight on Sunday evening or Monday evening shall see. Hopefully all works out this time am eager to see if this thing flies.

Ok well all the bugs are not quite out yet. Prop spun the wrong way and while switching wires one of my solderes came loos so I have to remove the stab and commence to soldering again. no big deal just a few minutes of rework to do, On the plus side I learned a lot about props cause aparently I had that backwards too LOL My Tx is due tomorrow and hopefully it will be here in time for me to bind and try again. Soon I hope :-)
