Default Yard Bird 22 Unboxing and Build Log

I've joined the Yard Bird club, I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on the YB22 Combo Kit that is offered over at www.yardbirdrc.com if you are curious what is included in the kit, I made a quick unboxing video....enjoy!!!

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Combo kit includes

1 x Yardbird RC YB-22
1 x Moltrolfly 2210-1700
1 x Moltrolfly FM20 ESC
1 x SONIC POWER 1300mah 11.1V 25C (not shown in video)
1 x APC 7x5 Electric Prop
2 x YB1122 Ball Bearing Servo

I will be adding some build pictures as I go along. I am pretty stoked about finally getting this little foamy. A few of my friends have Yard Birds and I have seen these little baby's fly in as much as 18 mph winds with no problem. The Yard Bird is a definite go to plane for flying in just about any flying area with nice slow fly capabilities for even the smaller flight zones.

Yardbird has some pretty nice stuff. I've built and flown the F-18, but I powered it with the 2212-6 2200kv motor for a little extra "umph".

Looking forward to the build! I see you're in K-town. I used to be stationed down the road at Sembach many many years ago.

Yea good stuff, I like all of the versions of the Yard Birds and I have a warm spot for the YB22 version since it makes for a little better slow fly capabilities because of the wider wing area. I am doing this yard bird up right and covering it with Ultracote before I put it all together. There will be a little bit of weight added but it sure is starting to look sweet with the added color. I'm going with a sporty purple wing and sun yellow canopy area color sceme. I might go with your suggestion down the road and throw a 2200 kv motor on her to see how she handles, I like the idea of a little extra unmph...

Default Build Log 08.26.12

Well it has been slow going but I am finally getting some time to continue with my covering and building of the Yard Bird 22. I decided to give this bird some color and I figured the easiest way to do that is to just cover the pieces as I go. I ran across a really good deal on a bundle of covering a few months back and I have been chomping at the bit to get some use of it and try my hand at another aspect of our hobby. The challenge that I am having is my noobness regarding covering, this is my very first attempt at covering anything so even though I have read up a bit on the traditional techniques I am still learning as I go. Here are a few shots of what I have so far. I'll post some more pictures when I get a few steps further.

I finally got some time to work on my Yard Bird 22. This is my first ever covering project and let me tell you it does take some time. I covered every piece prior to assembly so a build that would normally have been done in a few hours turned into weeks mostly due to getting the free time to work each individual piece and then slowly put it all together. Nevertheless I finally finished putting everything together this evening. Here are a few pictures of what it looks like with the covering and decals. As soon as I get a chance to maiden it I'll post a flight report!

Wow, that is a lot of color. You won't miss that one in the air!

Any idea what your AUW is? I hope you're not too heavy. If so, you could always move up to a 2212-6 2200kv motor for more thrust.

The AUW with 1300mAH battery the YB22 is just at 15.5oz. I maidened her and did about 8 flights so far this weekend and I have had zero problems with weight. I actually even ran a bit larger pack a 3S 1500mAh and she did beautifully.

Default Maiden Flight Report

Well I was a little bit anxious about this weekends maiden flight since I had gone outside the specs by adding some Ultracote to the foam pieces before assembly...but you know what this is one of those times I just had to give it some color. Most of this need for color stemmed from that fact that I have friends that own this plane in the stock foam color (black) and it is really hard to tell the orientation and what not when they are in the air. So I figured why not, lets do this right from the build up and cover it as I go.

As for the maiden actually it went off without a hitch. I hand launched her and she took off out of my hand with ease. I was a little bit worried about battery placement to get the right CG so I first went with the battery placed closest to the rear of the compartment furthest from the motor, a few flights later after trying different battery locations, it turned out that actually the battery placed dead center works great.

On today's flights I performed typical pattern flight maneuvers like rolls, loops, inverted flight and some corkscrews and before I packed everything out I finished off the day doing some slow flight harriers to see what the YB is capable of and as expected the YB22 handled all of the maneuvers wonderfully. All in all I would recommend this plan to anyone that needs a backyard flyer with slow flight capabilities and the muscle to do some high-speed action as well. Below are a few flight pictures enjoy.
