Need Advice,Powering a 1/4 aeronca

First off let me say what a great forum you have here.

I have a 1/4 aeronca that was given to me about 12 years ago(just now getting around to building it). I have decided I want to go E-power but I am a bit confused on what to power it with. I'm looking at the following items but would like some advice before puling the plug on purchasing.


Turnigy RotoMax 1.20 Brushless Outrunner Motor

Turnigy dlux 120A HV Brushless Speed Controller (OPTO).

Also need advice as what to what battery would be best suited for that application.(if this system is suitable for my needs). Any and all advice would be Greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about your plane. Need the approx weight and wing span of the finished aircraft.

Also what you estimate the ground clearence to be at the motor shaft.

Do they provide a recommendation for a glow or gas engine and prop?

Great looking and flying model. Power by a Rimfire 1.20 with 2 5000 mah lipos. Rimfire .60 would be better, as the 1.20 is too much motor for scale flying unless its on floats. But the finished airplane is beautiful and gets lots of positive comments. Very happy with it. The bottom hatch on the nose came off on landing; perhaps the holding spring needs to be beefed up somewhat.

109" wing shooting for under 20lbs for sure. Suggested motor size is 110-160 nitro I'm pretty sure it could clear a 22" prop.

OK, let's assume 20 pounds. So you want about a 2000 watt motor that will swing a 20 to 22" prop.

So let's see how your motor choice stacks up:

Lines up well with the target I suggested.


Max current on this motor on 8 cell lipo pack is 65 amps

You listed a 120 A ESC. Certainly that will work but it is a bit over kill. They recommend an 80 amp ESC so you can downsize a bit if you wish, but your choice will work.

You should have plenty of room in that fuse, so I might suggest this 5000 mah pack. You could run them as a parallel pair to get longer flight times.

We have a good charger already. And we were planning on running 2 4s 5000mah packs. so we can get more use out of the 4s battery's. We picked the 120a esc as the others didn't seem to support 8s.

I'm use to tinkering with the nitro planes, so when I started reading up on the electrics it was kind of overwhelming trying to figure out all the numbers. Starting to get a grasp of it now ( I think ) LOL. Any how thanks again, now its time to order up some goodies.

Check out the Hacker A60-5S motor. I've got both the A60-5S and A60-16M motors in two giant scale models. Both motors are real powerhouses, and both are very well made. Their prop shafts are threaded like a glow engine, rather than bolting on a prop adapter on the shaft. I'm running mine on a 10S2P A123 and a 12S2P A123 packs respectively pulling about 60 Amps at full power. Under this load, these motors only get slightly warm, running a 19X12 prop at 7000 RPM for the -16M motor.

The A60-16M motor has over 190 flights on it now.

And, its slightly less expensive than the Axi motor.

It took me over a year to get comfortable with E Power, dont rush it, take your time, it almost overwhelmed me at first, I was ready to go back to Nitro Look at Heads up Rc Motor pages, Jeff has a lot on info there, I learned a lot by looking at heads up RC motor pages and the info given with the different motor power systems and thrust Measurements, and by emailing Jeff, Take care and have fun, Chellie

Yeah
IMHO, it's mandatory to put battery backup systems into these larger giant scale models. (Or for that matter, any model with a lot of building time, or $$$$ invested in it.) Both for safety, and for reliability. Electric giant scale models get expensive real fast.
