Default Ales question

I have a Radian sailplane and with a altitude limiter and plan to enter some ALES contests this summer. I have read the rules online and understand them, but I was curious about something. I also have a Thermal Scout from Winged Shadow System installed. Not expensive. About $ 39.00 and I know this is NOT allowed under the rules, BUT WHY ? Years ago , I went with a friend who fly's full size sailplanes, to Minden Nev. for a full scale sailplane contest, and all the sailplanes had variometers in them. I also asked him if he would fly a sailplane without a vario and he said no. So I wonder why some technology used in full scale sailplanes is rejected in models ? (contests) Just curious is all, not trying to make a point ! Just curious !

Because some people consider them an unfair advantage, that's why. Not saying it is right, just saying. Some contests they are good to go, but in others you can't use them. From what I have heard, it is up to the CD as to allow them or not. Check around and you may find places you can use them.

I have been practicing a lot, but in a contest no. The club holds the ales contest on the last Sun. of every month, but it seems I have always been tied up on those days. Disapointed, but maybe this month I hope ! By the way, that thermal scout works great, really works !! Also, all my practice sessions have been going really well ! The spoilers on my Radian work perfect, so should do well when I finally get to try a contest !
