Where do you fly?

Don't need to give any specifics but just curious. For me personally, I'm lucky because I have a decent size soccer field about 2 minutes from my house that I fly at. And it's rarely occupied. A lot of people launch model rockets there as well. About 5 minutes away there's a community park with a lot of open area and a decent size grass field.

Also curious, where do you fly indoors? Is there any membership required or do you pay any fees to get in?

Same thing. About 1 3/4 miles away is a rather large, open soccer complex we utilize in the early AM hours for the planes and large helis, and indoors for the CX's, and yes, I still fly my 'lil Airhogs Havoc...good little flier that Airhogs...

I got almost to the end of the video and noticed your dog. He/She does the same thing my dog does...and my cat, my cat will just lay on the throw rug, and watch it's every move. The CX is bigger, so it scares both of them, but my Wife's Finches FREAK OUT whenever that CX is flying around...

Fly in a park, couple of empty church parkinglots near me, and about a 20 minute drive away is alittle chuck of salt flats. I highly reccomennd the salt flats for a flying feild. No tree's and miles to setup if you want it. Takeoff and land in any direction.

I fly my big planes at the local Community College parking lot. Generally after 4:00 PM the parking lot is empty enough. Makes for a huge runway. My micros and my T-28 I fly at the city park at a soccer field.

Is it true Basenjis don't bark? I've often heard that said about them, and I always thought they were just the standard fawn color, never seen a spotted one like yours.

I fly rite behind my house. There is a stalled home building project back there and it gives me lots of flying space and a nice street to use as a runway. There is also a park at the same location for belly landed planes like my fun jet and Stryker.

We fly at our local Senior Center which has a paved easment running West to East and dead ended at both ends. This is used as our runway.

All good options. I'm curious, I see videos of folks flying in what appear to be school gymnasiums. How does one go about getting permission for that?

First off, you need to find a school with a suitable gym, then talk to the people at the school. Having the backing of the AMA will help immensely in making you look 'official'. AMA also may be able to help you with tips, paperwork, insurance and so on. They have a staff member who's job is flying site issues generally.

At risk of sounding biased, which I am, you'll stand a better chance with the national body behind you than as a group of folk who fly little toy airplanes from any handy field that takes your fancy.

http://www.flyingym.com/ is the site for an indoor flying group that runs every winter just west of Chicago. I haven't gotten to a meet yet, but plan on the Sunday PM sessions in the new year. If you ask nicely, the guy behind this may be able to give you some ideas to get you started. The website itself has a lot of good info on it as well as keeping the membership informed on stuff.

If you can track down anyone on the staff with an interest in model flying, it could help get your foot in the door. For example - in northern VA, there's a high school that has a very popular indoor meet in the large school gym. The guy behind it is one of their teachers who also has a background in aviation engineering and running the meeting is done by one of his classes as a aviation connected school project.

About 800X1600 of open space surrounded by about 1/2 mile of overfly tree area on 3 sides. It is a wondeful field. Primarily a glider field.

I also fly in front of the house with my Vapor, micro helis and some other micro planes.

There is a small factory a couple blocks down the street from my house. The owner is a baseball fanatic so he built a ball field out back. I have permission to fly there, it's pretty awesome having a field within walking distance from my house.

There are only 2 tall trees at the edge of the field and I managed to stick the plane in the top of one of them yesterday.

Managed to get it down this morning with a rod and reel with a tarp strap hook tied to the line. I guess all that time I spent bass fishing in ponds paid off, nailed it on the second cast

I walk up behind my house to this road. I don't want to pack up my truck and drive miles to some field - that is - assuming I could find a field these days. This is a challenging location, especially for a newb like myself. The tall power poles and lines on one side wait for the unwary. If you lose control over the interstate, your bird will have but moments to live. On the upwind side of the road is the beginning of multiple subdivisions that run downslope for several miles (though you can't see them for the trees along the road). If you bonk it on the far side of those trees, good luck in finding the aircraft. It will likely be in someone's yard. The hardest thing is the perpetual crosswind that blows across the road. Makes it hard to land, especially with 3 channels and no ailerons. It's a great location for flying the upslope winds that come from the housing side. I'm sure I confound a lot of drivers on the interstate, who are trying to figure out what that hovering UFO just above them is.

I'm not sure that flying anywhere near an interstate is a good idea.That's an accident waiting to happen in my book.
