Nigel,
I think we've all had similar days. Makes the good days even more rewarding. Plus, makes one learn to repair things or the hobby becomes uber expensive. With your build and repair skills, you'll have those babies back in the Latvian skies very soon. Dang, it seems cold there ! |

Anyway - have flight ticket issued for 28th tio Singapore ... so all stop for a about 2 weeks ... Give me time to make my shopping list for parts ... Nigel |

When you live in the city that is next to a river, calm to little wind days are very rare. When the wind is strong and transportation is down, I am glad I have my RF G6 simulator to fly on. Two twenty minute flights a day is enough for me.

I have private estate on the River - just inland from Baltic sea. So I know the wind situation well.
I also retire to a Sim on bad days ! What would be really good is if I could get rid of all the trees - then I could fly at home !. Nigel |

Me too Nigel. I have 40 acres but too many trees. OK for choppers but not for sport or scale sadly. I haven't been to Singapore but used to buy stuff there many years ago (Before internet) as it was the only place with decent supplies and prices back then.

Had " one of those days" yesterday. Nosed in the T45 conversion shortly after hand launch, trashed a the 6.5 # HK Yak-54 on maiden, nosed in the F-16 on hand launch. The Jpowers T-45 and F-16 are repairable. The Yak met its maker and is in the bin.
Oh well, forward we go ! -Hawk |

ouch!!that hurts
.but remember that good ol saying" a bad day of flying is still better than a good day at work" ......naahhhh,i'd rather go to work and save the planes for good days flying .my first weekend flying this season and knocked off to lg's on 2 planes, already repaired so i say it was 2 good days. |

Nigel i have had days like that but i most times only bring two planes with and most times one returns unscaved. I have seen alot of film from the UK and even know a few guys who fly there from the bimbo's thread for Ivans planes . One thing i always notice is the very bad flying fields you guys fly off of. All of the clubs here in IL are ranked as not so good because we dont have 1000 ft runways for jets and camping sites but we still roll our fields and spray for weeds each spring and plant new grass seed in the bare spots . I cant even think how many landing gear get tore off flying on those UK fields. I have scott comming from the UK to see the states soon and i will take him flying at some of our better fields and then he is off for some big electric flyins down south. Here is one field i use to fly at,the paved runway is 300 ft here .

Our field is going through a Spring sprout up of dandelions and weeds. Very snarly at the moment. We have A 3DHS fly-in event in three weeks and before that, we will have it cut and rolled. Meantime, it's hard on small planes with retracts. Had a go today with my DH88 Comet. Took off and flew beautifully but got snarled up in the tall weedy grass and nosed over badly on landing. Should have bellly landed her. The Phase 3 F-16 performed well but the little Jpowers 50mm F-16 bit the dust. The C-310 was a no go from the beginning. More LG problems. The PZ P-51 did okay. All in all the carnage was not as bad as yesterday. All the repair work I do, keeps me away from building new ones. -Hawk |

So yes the telescopic antenna was down - but that is normal as it's only used if I fit an FM module. Look closely again at video and you'll see the stub 2.4Ghz antenna at back of radio. I do like having the telescopic antenna though ... I fix my ribbon to it and if you watch many of my vids - I extend it and use it to check wind direction before launch. I retract before the off though to avoid inductance or loss of 2.4Ghz signal ... This brings us to an interesting question .... which I shall pose in the radio section .... Does extending the M antenna cause any reduction or problem of signal to Rx ... Nigel |

As far as the FM antenna, they run at 72 Mhz. These 2.4 Ghz radios run at 2400 Mhz, or 33 times higher in frequency. IMHO, the 72 Mhz antenna would have no effect on the microwave frequency. In fact, by retracting the 72 Mhz antenna, you'd actually be increasing the "Tuned Frequency" of the 72 Mhz antenna. Even so, that FM antenna tuned frequency would still be far below the 2400 Mhz (2.4 Ghz) of the microwave antenna. Just about the only way you'd affect the 2.4 Ghz frequency would be to have another antenna tuned to 2.4 Ghz, (or a much higher 2.4 Ghz harmonic frequency) and it would have to be very close to the transmitter itself. Some years back, I took a look at the transmitted signal of a 72 Mhz transmitter on my 100 Mhz Tektronix oscilloscope. Got a very nice sinewave. Then, another 72 Mhz transmitter on a different frequency was placed a few feet from the first unit. I was stunned by the amount of interaction between the two transmitters. To say there was a lot of interaction would be a major understatement. Moving the two transmitters 10 feet apart completely eliminated the interaction. |

It's not so much the frequency difference but any inductance etc. that may occur or even re-radiated signal no matter how weak.
On ships it was common to have stripped co-ax taped to rails etc. to extend Walkie Talkie contact ... so they said - me ? I never believed it and today still don't. But at College we had Inductance and wire runs parallel to RF gear rammed home to us ... so something must be there !! Anyway - never had a glitch with it ... just interested. Oh - near forgot ... my Old JR Propo of the 80's on 35Mhz - I did take-off one time with antenna down ... did full circuit at some distance while another guy ran over to extend it for me ... but that was JR then !! I even made a grid dip meter myself, still have it, and still use it. This meter only works to about 100 Mhz though, not even close to 2400 Mhz, or 2.4 Ghz. Transmitted signals are pretty much unaffected by nearby stuff, unless that nearby stuff is tuned to the same frequency. Microwave signals could be reflected by nearby metal buildings I guess, but there are no metal buildings anywhere near where our club field is located. |

Better weather here but going to be a bit breezy this weekend. If you get to Dallas Ft. Worth, look me up. I'll show you a good time. We have a 3DHS fly-in the 19th -21st. Flew the T-45 conversion today for possibly the last time. Torqued it in again. Just not much left I can repair. Wiould need to re-craft the nose section. Might just start the cycle of life again with a new airframe. Also had a mid-air with my C-182 and my buddie's PZ-T-28. He came up from below. They connected and stuck together dropping to earth like a parachute. My Cessna had very little damage but the T=28 didn't make it through quite as well. Cheers, Hawk |
