Default Volunteers Needed for TransAmerica Tour 2014 >> Another Historic Event

We are not afraid to admit that we love the sport of model aviation. Nor are we afraid to admit we love our country and we certainly aren't afraid to fight for our freedom because we know the freedoms that we enjoy are not free and come at a price. A very high price. That is why we have decided to showcase our sport to America and to help the Wounded Warriors Project empower those American heroes that pay the price for our freedom every day of their lives.

Our plan is to fly two airplanes across the USA. One gas powered plane and one electric powered plane. The gas powered plane starting in California will fly west to east and the electric powered plane will start in Georgia at SEFF and fly west. We want to involve as many AMA clubs as possible along both routes as they travel across the USA. Our plan is to involve the local media to showcase model aviation and to help raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). The fundraising goal for this event will be $10,000 to the WWP.

The gas powered called "American Spirit" will take off from the Muroc Model Masters (MMM) field at Edwards AFB California in April of 2014 and begin its journey east to the Riverside Aeromodelers Society (RAMS) in North Carolina. The electric powered plane called "American Pulse" will begin its journey from Southeast Electric Flight Festival (SEFF) in Georgia next April and fly to the Southern Minnesota Model Aircraft Club (SMMAC) in Minnesota. Both will fly along a predetermined route to the next club that has volunteered to take part. The planes will land, be refueled or batteries changed out, and the next team consisting of a driver, spotter, and pilot will take over. The team that takes over will be from the next club on the route. This way they are familiar with its location and the peculiars about landing at that field. We would not want pilots to be landing at unfamiliar fields. And if they have to land sooner than expected, they know the area and its alternate landing locations. This will repeat all across the USA. We hope that the clubs along the route will contact their local media outlets and explain the TransAmerica Tour 2014 to them. Teams will be provided talking points about the AMA, model aviation and the Wounded Warriors Project and how they can donate to help our American heroes in their daily lives.

Airplanes, engines, radios, electronics, cars and all support equipment is hoped to be provided by potential sponsors of TransAmerica Tour 2014. We are also working with a television production company to film this tour and a number of model aviation events in 2014 to help showcase model aviation and bring it to prime time television.

To volunteer to assist in this effort contact Frank. Please provide the name and zip code of your club and a Point of Contact (POC) with an email address and phone number. He will also need to know what model your club would like to fly; the gas or electric powered one. As the event is finalized, he will be in touch to get the pilot's name, the spotter's name and the driver's name.

Here is our route and participating clubs map: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/ed...A.kuXQvjLfKZUE

Thanks,

Frank

Frank,

Please sign my club up for both planes! Our club is the Arizona Model Aviators (www.azmodelaviators.com) located in Mesa, AZ. I will discuss this with the club and get you more information soon regarding pilot names, spotters and drivers. You can use me as POC. I will PM you my details, although I think you already have most of it.

Got it Pat and I have added your club to both lists. Please note that the planes will be following two different routes and that the electric powered plane may not make it to AZ.

Thanks for volunteering your club!

Thanks Don! This is a great opportunity for model aviation enthusiasts all across the country. And it is going to be wonderful to see The Discovery Channel put model aviation on prime time TV for all to see.

We have our volunteers who will be kicking off the event at SEFF and flying the first leg. No doubt everyone knows who they are. Two people known worldwide in model aviation and especially at SEFF.

If you are in the following states and would like to volunteer, now would be a good time to let me know so we can secure the route.

Alabama
Tennessee
Kentucky
Indiana
Illinois
Wisconsin

Thanks,

Frank

What's the status of deciding which plane to use? Sponsors might want to say something about that and that could be a good thing!

Mike,

Right now the map is only showing participating clubs. Here is the map legend.

The red colored balloons are participating teams for the electric powered plane (Team Pulse).

The cyan colored airplane icons are participating clubs for the gas powered plane. (Team Spirit)

The yellow balloons are clubs that have been contacted and we are waiting on a confirmation of participation.

The gas powered plane called "American Spirit" will take off from the Muroc Model Masters (MMM) field at Edwards AFB, California in April of 2014 and begin its journey east to the Riverside Aeromodelers Society (RAMS) in North Carolina. The electric powered plane called "American Pulse" will begin its journey from Southeast Electric Flight Festival (SEFF) in Georgia next April and fly to the Southern Minnesota Model Aircraft Club (SMMAC) in Minnesota.

Once we get enough volunteers, I can draw a line connecting them to show in pretty good detail the route we will fly. Right now we are looking for volunteers for both planes. It looks like Team Spirit will fly a southern route and Team Pulse is pretty wide open right now looking for clubs between GA and MN.

The planes were relatively easy to pick out. There were not many that could meet our requirements.

Yea, Team Pulse won't make it that far west unless we get a ton of people volunteering out your way. It's doable, but doubtful that many people will want to participate even when it is for such a worthy cause.

But I have been surprised before and we'll see. If a direct route from GA to MN is via TX then it is via TX. The more people that fly the more people we can reach out to.

BTW, here is a few photos taken by Pro Staff Member Alex Gelina of the T-Clips. This is Sig's newest plane that we will most likely be using for Team Pulse.

EDIT: I tried to upload the photos but it is failing on me. The pop up says I don't have the correct security certificates.

But here she is right here: http://www.sigplanes.com/SIG-T-Clips-ARF_p_128.html

My unsolicited advice - in order to keep it "tidy" and timely I would really control the route. Otherwise this too may turn into a 4+ year adventure like WAA. While a great thing - the LONG timeline of that project really killed the buzz IMHO.

That is great advice Mike. We should try to keep a pretty direct route to WATTS over Owatonna from SEFF. That should my time to a minimum as well. My wife already thinks I am off my rocker for starting another project of this magnitude, especially two of them.

On a good note, WAA-08 will be over this year, and the SQuiRT will "retire" to the museum up in Muncie. 5 years is a long time for any volunteer project.

Frank if it ends up out here in West Tennessee keep us in mind. We're a bunch of AMA independents though. There is a bridge across the Mississippi close to Dyersburg but it is an Interstate hwy which could be problematic.

Take care and thanks for posting at WattFlyer!!

BTW, the photos need to be resized smaller when you get that error message. We're still anxiously waiting on our photo resizer to be fixed after a year or so..... Here's a shot I took of one of the Sigs at SEFF. They are a cool looking plane!

Thanks Don and will do. There will be some places like that where we will not be able to safely fly and have to transport the plane.

And thanks for the info on the pics and posting the T-Clips photo.

Interest is growing in the tour and we have had quite a few volunteers and even some sponsors reach out to help support the event.

Are there any WF members here that would like to tale part? It's not often you get the chance to make history and have fun doing it.

Good news. Steve Neu from Neu Motors has generously offered to support Team Pulse and is researching a prop, gearbox and motor combination for us to use on the T-Clips.

If you are not familiar with these outstanding motors that are made right here in the USA, you can check them out here: http://www.neumotors.com/Site/Welcome.html
