Cool Eastern Soaring League Comes to LI NY for third time 9/21-22/13

Eastern Soaring League Comes to LI NY for third time 9/21-22/13
The Eastern Soaring League will be coming back to the Long Island Silent Flyers field for the third time this season. This will be Thermal Duration for unlimited sailplane flown off winches in a Man-on-Man format.

We will fly one contest on Saturday and another on Sunday. So you can come for one day or for both. Typically we have had 25 to 40 pilots for this contest so you LSF level 4 and 5 pilots should be all set.

In Expert you can expect to see mostly molded and bagged wing high end contest ships flown by pilots who are ... well ... experts. To win in Expert you better be making your time every round and your landings better be in the 90s every time. If you want to fly with the best, fly ESL Expert.

In Sportsman you will see the full range, from molded composites to molded foam. Explorers to Easy Gliders may be seen in Sportsman. If you can make your time most of the time and can hit the landing tape most of the time, you may be in the running for a top finish in Sportsman. You will have an opportunity to work with Expert timers who can help you improve your skills and your scores. If you are not good with the winch, no problem, we will launch it for you, and I promise you will not be the only one.

In Novice, just bring what you have that has a hook, we can help you launch it if you are not familiar with the winch. Novice pilots are there to learn about contest flying and to gain experience and coaching by working with more experienced pilots. You can fly Novice on Saturday and shift to Sportsman or Expert on Sunday if you like. That happens a lot!

Novice pilots fly free so Experts and Sportsman, grab that guy in your club who you think would enjoy the experience and sign him up as Novice. Once he tries ESL flying he is going to love it. He can register in advance as Novice.

If you have never flown a TD contest before, don't hesitate to join us. The ESL is all about helping people improve their skills in the fun format of contest flying. And if you think you are good, come test that notion with the rest of the ESL pilots.

So, whether you are a world class pilot, getting good or just getting started, this will be a great contest for you to attend. Anything that can be flown off a winch will be welcome.

Weather permitting, we usually open the field on Friday afternoon for practice for those who are registered for the contest.

If you want to check the location, use 25 Southwoods Road, Syosset, NY 11791. That also works for your GPS. We fly in Stillwell Woods Nature Preserve. Open field is 800X1600 with about 1/2 mile of over fly on three sides beyond that. Lots of sky! www.lisf.org

Please post your questions.

We are up to 22 pilots and this is when the numbers typically start to grow, so please get your registrations in so we know how much food to order.

For all you pure glider pilots, if you care to be in the NYC/LI area this weekend come join us for a great Thermal Duration contest Saturday and/or Sunday. We will be hosting the Eastern Soaring League and all are welcome.

This will be TD, MOM off 4-5 winches. We now have 32 pilots registered and I expect that to keep going up.

They are cutting the grass today so the field should be in great shape.

If you can be in the NYC area this weekend, come join us. We are about 30 miles East on Long Island.
