Default Travel air mystery ship

I'm curious how many out there have a Travel Air Mystery Ship. I bought one made by EcomRC from Troybuilt Models recently and ont he find it a thrill just looking at it. I consider it a study in classic Art Deco grace and sheer beauty.

It flys every bit as well as it looks too. I maidened a couple weeks ago and never had to touch a trim button for the first time since I started flying RC five years ago and building and assembling several planes and ARF's.

There were some odd issues as usually found with most ARF's and builds but nothing serious. On the other hand it was the first time the CG was dead on perfect without any adjustments whatsover.

If anyone else has this plane I'd appreciate their impressions as comparison. I look forward to any comments or questions too.
Specs:

Scale: 1:5.76
Wingspan: 58"
Length: 42in
Wing Load: 23oz/sqft (as published by Troybuilt with lightest setup @5.3lb)
AUW: 6lbs
Motor: EXCEE RC MONSTER POWER 32 770Kv
ESC/BEC: EXCEED RC OPTO 60A/DIMENSION ENG'G SPORT BEC
Prop: 13X8E APC
BAT: 5S 4000 30C
Servos: E&R= FUTABA S3304/ A= HS-225BB

NOTE: Intended photos failed to download followed by an error msg stating my "submission could not be processed because a security token was missing."

Too much aggravation.....if anyone's interested go to RC Group's and look up my Build Blog for the "Travel Air Mystery Ship":

Yeah, that's a great looking plane. Excellent scale features for that price.

Thanks guys....
The rudder pushrod guide tube was installed incorrectly but I was able to remove it and reinstall it. Since that was successful I removed the elevator tube also and reinstalled it directly down center to allow for an internal elevator horn which worked out just perfectly. If I was to do another one I'd like to add a pull-pull cable for the the rudder too.

Very long, 50mm bolts intended to secure the TE of the wing.....way too long with nothing in between the wing and where the blind nuts were orig installed. I epoxied a couple tall block reinforced "pillers" to give more support. Ideally I could have added a horiz plate even with the saddle with blind nuts to hold the wing down but didn't think of it untill after the fact.

I posted a fairly complete build log on RCG's with several photos and more detailed notes if anyone's interested: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/member.php?u=208594

Best,

Dick

P.S.
I'm not tryinig sell anything but noticed the plane is back in stock on Troybuilt Models website

Don, FYI the photos didn't have to be downsized. Thanks for your help.

Hi tarheal, Thanks for the photo.....it's such a magnificent airplane. Do know any details about that particular build? I assume it must be a reprodution because I think the orig is in Chicago.
Thanks again,
Dick

I am not really sure of the origin of this particular one. They might have something on the museum page though.

I certainly share your appreciation......

In addition to a Fred Reese 1/5 scale short kit in the box, I just received a set of AMA Travel Air Mystery Ship plans (60" wing span) to build another one from.

AMA has a 20% discount on all their plans til Oct 31st, plus I think we get another 10% off as AMA members. http://www.modelaviation.com/travelairmysteryship[/I]

1/6 Scale lazer cut kits for AMA plans are sold separately from "NATIONAL BALSA"for $90.00 - $139.00 from - check it out. http://www.nationalbalsa.com/product_p/tams.htm

The Beechcraft Museum didn't cover much info on it other than they had an orig wing and part of some salvaged parts from a wreck. I didn't notice the photo you posted....
