Default Amazon's Idea For Local Delivery Service

Saw a spot on this evenings 60min's weekly.....Quad drone delivery.

Here's USA Today's article:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2...ivery/3799021/

I can imagine the FAA will have a field day with logistics and liability issues associated with this interesting prospect....anyone here willing to invest in stock options on this.......

Yeah I also saw that clip on the 60 Minutes TV show.

Wonder how they are going to handle homes with lots of trees, powerlines and such nearby? They claimed a radius of 10 miles on these things, that's 20 miles to and from. And, they've got to recharge each unit when it returns. Or, have a whole truckload of LiPos to run their fleet of these things.

Guess if you've got a whole pile of $$$$, maybe anything is possible?

just a bunch of nonsense IMHO.

How would the drone avoid collision with moving vehcles, pedestrians etc? or power lines, or othjer drones or full size aircraft? What stops someone stealing it or your dog taking a bite out of it?

And as for the practicality, it could carry maybe a Kg or two and when fully loaded it's duration would be dramatically reduced, giving it a round trip range of maybe a couple of miles, nothing like 10 mile radius claimed. At which point it would have to return to base for new batteries or a re-charge.

With current technology it's a total non-starter, just a bunch of hot air.

I've dealt with Amazon for years on a business level. They have a think tank full of young MIT grads that are always coming up with far out ideas for Bezos. Notice he's entering the Space program ? Sunday delivery? The locker ? Anything for the "Wow" factor. That's why they bought Zappos. Lot's of moving parts with this company.

This one will never fly! But never count them out. Most people don't know that their valuation is actually higher than Wal-Mart. A consultant friend of mine explains Amazon quite well. It's off topic here but interesting nevertheless if you have a few minutes:

How about some punk kid taking one out with a slingshot or a shotgun?

Or their delivery quad getting involved with a police or traffic helicopter?

I think someone just came up with a cute idea, maybe to make the general public think better about quad drones, just to get Amazon on the news.

I don't think this has much of a chance, even though quad technology will be totally awesome in 5-10 years.

Yeah
They indicate 10 miles range, or 20 miles to and from. At perhaps 10 minutes on a battery charge, that model is going to have to fly at 120 MPH. And, at 120 MPH, if it hits anything, its going to cause real damage. Just doubt if it can go anywhere near that 120 MPH though.

i agree with everyones comments since we all agree it doesn't make sense.

but i suppose if amazon joins AMA,and they keep their drone in line of site by the pilot [and spotter]with the drone, they can deliver my next foamy to my clubs field while I'm there flying...........but don't look at me if their drone disappears.

narrow is the place to land...wide is the space to crash....choose the narrow way!

Yep......the Amazonian brain thrust has lot's to think about on this one (it's certainly more than a customer service issue).....the apparent obstacles to overcome would cost the consumer a pretty pennie.......I don't even see the US Postal Service being threatened by this competition in the next 5 years.....lol

LOL
Methinks it wouldn't take long for those hackers to take over those models, and sell them on Ebay, after a paint job of course!

Trial lawyers can't wait for this to happen. Bezos is always finding new ways to draw attention. Kudos for good marketing. 60 minutes is always looking for an interesting story to sell advertising. Check. This has a snowball's chance in hell of ever happening and it should not happen. Think mother with baby carriage in front of house.
