Great idea Nigel. Something I've been thinking about for ages now as the idea of flying in the garden really appeals to me as well, however, thinking about it and getting around to it are two very different things aren't they!!.
It's really satisfying to modify and old plan.
Looking forward to the maiden reports

All you need now is a Spitty to knock that thing out of the sky !

Guess what..... I also have the Spit plan of same series! funny thing I prefer the Hurricane......

But I have my J3 wood job still to finish.... my mini Watt Four to do.... and a 'few' others in mind!

This Dora gets more appealing as I add bits.... at first it was just a joke trial....

The good ol' Veron design. They still come up from time to time on Ebay I believe. That's a good size for 3s-800 and the outrunner you have there.

Couldn't pass up posting this one below, when I saw you mention FW190 Cartoon scale. I built a second Guillows FW190 that is a bit more proper. This early attempt in my flying career at rud/elev was a flop, but actually flew with a scrapped AR234 EDF wing. If you're looking for a good cartoon scheme, the Austin Powers FW190 is the best I've seen yet.

Reckon two more sessions should see here ready.

Paint will be my usual household emulsion..... gives excellent semi matt war bird finish and fills dings.

Nearly there ....

Fitted wing to fuselage ..

Used PU glue to fill gaps ..

Started on 'cartoon canopy' ..

Start fitting radio gear before any closing up..

Aileron servos under but arms through to top ..

Tail servo

Trusty servo tester to set all neutrals before glueing in..

For control horns ... it's good enough to cut a hollow into foam and glue them in ... giving a layer of glue over top as well ..

Carrying on with canopy and hatch ...

Wiring and ESC .... 20A Mystery ....

Once canopy is completed ... then it's painting time ... and I have various reference books for many aircraft .. here is my WW2 favourite ...

and the FW190 in particular from this book :

and variations (all authentic ) ...

I tried the power plant - the 6x4 just didn't seem to have the 'oomph' ... so swapped to a 7x5. Means the 800 LiPo is not enough.

Weight of airfame + radio + ESC + Motor = 265gr

Weight with 800 3S = 333gr

Weight with 1300 3S = 380vgr

So 1300 it is ... on the 7x5 ... if she feels more than enough in flight - I may drop back to 6x4 .....

Looking like good for the weekend maiden ....

Good luck with the maiden, hope your 'eye for what flies' has done the trick again.

Cartoon scale models often look to me like they might be tricky, big fat fuselage and not a lot of wing or tail. My crystal ball says it might be a bit 'snappy'... time will tell.

Jetplaneflyer .... I have no illusions that she will be a steady flyer and will probably need a lot of taming down ... I left wing flat bottom to help keep reasonable lift for small wing.

Onto day 4 and she's getting to final stages ...

Decided to halve the hatch into fixed cockpit and latched front end ...

Starting to lay out markings ... masking tape does good Luftwaffe ..

I'm going to combine various schemes out of the book ... base grey with mottling green spray 'dots' ...

Red markings in marker pen before painting ..

Now overall grey base ..

Wait for that to dry and then do the underside ... then onto the spray can 'spurts' over top and then touch back in the black and red parts....

She may be a bit rough close up .... but I am quite pleased that she is coming out quite reasonable .... of course as JPF says - she will likely be a bit snappy till dialled in ...

Hi Dahawk ..... dunno - have to check the book !!

Here's my compromise of a few Dora's from the book .... thought it better to combine some to give better effect ...

Still a few markings etc. to add ....

Todays Thursday .... reckon she'll be launched Saturday ...

Now to put aside while paint dries .... and I start on next model !!

Found that balance at final was a bit aft so built a battery box more forward - meant cutting out former #2 ... fit floor ... move ESC back ... then a new sub bulkhead to keep battery forward ..

Then once the paint was dry etc. - I hand finished a few more markings just to give her a bit of character ...

So now she is ready to go .... the box is good for 3S 800 up to 1800 standard shape LiPo's ... with balance at 33% chord.

Looking fwd to maiden - possibly tmrw (Saturday)

This is not for the weak of heart !!

Launched and she gyrated bank to bank and finally I closed throttle - let her settle in the tall rough field ...

Switched in D/R .... launched again ... boy is she sensitive ... she ended up cartwheeling and broke one wing .... BUT she flies ! Just need to tone her down to controllable !!

Wing break is clean so not a problem.

Power ... adequate but not over ... once trimmed ... sorted to fly - could do with an upgrade I think ... the frame is draggy for such a motor ...

Sounds like a 20" Guillows Edge540 conversion I flew recently several times. Once trimmed, you can fly it, but very carefully. Like most small sport planes with a bit of weight, it's not the kind of plane that seems highly stable in rolls and loops. It's also difficult to control when the wind takes it a bit further than you cared for, and you can't see it well anymore.

Talk about TWITCHY !! even a breath on the stick and over she went !!

I'm not bothered as it was more of an experiment to see how far the cartoon scale concept could be pushed ...

We have a combo here of large fuselage and small wing .... maybe at it's limits !

Let's see what development brings ... on launch she was first to the right ... so indicates a right roll bias on ailerons ... then correction violently banked her to left ... then to right ... etc.

Hi Bill ... I would think any Edge at that size is going to be a handful !!

I will go so far with this one ... then if not successful - make it a "Wall Trophy" ....

The point is to see how far this concept can be pushed ...

I've now repaired her ... and swapped out the donkey 2204 1550kv motor for the RCTimer 2830 1300kv ... basically the one of the mount lugs on the donkey motor snapped of ...

She has enough power now to go unlimited vertical - so if no fly now ... nothing will do it !!

I've toned down the movements, added even more expo ...

Next try probably this afternoon ..

With 1800 3S up front ... my mate launched her for me ... I gave her 75% throttle and she went away like a dream !

But 2 mins later she dropped a wing and in she went ... you have to keep her fast and powered in a turn ... boy is she quick !!

This time firewall broke out ... so she's glued back - hopefully tmrw have another session at her ...

Video's not too good .... but does show her flying ... later will upload
