Default This I HAVE to try ! Smoke gear ...

I used to watch guys do smoke from models - but it always seemed a bit iffy .. injecting diesel into exhaust etc. ... then along came powder canisters etc. - for a few sec's colour.

Just caught this online ... I'm very interested ... 4 mins !

http://www.unlimited-rc.lv/en/prod/?cid=59&pid=478

Seems to be an electrically fired cartridge .. need to look into this more....

Ok ..........

System is :

Igniter plugs into Rx ... and can be activated via Gear or other switch.. direct without need for separate switch, or power.

http://www.unlimited-rc.lv/en/prod/?cid=59&pid=825

But I would elect to carry a small power pack and Rx connected switch ... so still Tx activated but powered separately.

The Ignition connects to the lead of the cartridge. Cartridges are 18gr or 60gr depending on smoke volume you want.

As you see for basically about 20 Euros ... you can have a 5 pack smoke system !

I know what I'll be ordering soon ... my Biplane will be great with it ...

Pretty cool. Wonder how much heat it generates. Might be an issue with foam planes. And how much a canister weighs. Where to mount? looks like they are nearby you in Finland. Can't imagine what shipping to the US might be. Very interesting indeed.

I'll put one in my cart and see what happens at check out. 20 Euro is about USD 27 Still not bad for a little surprise at the field.

I'd think since they were in the microphone business, they would come up with an inexpensive sound card. I have the SMS card( WASP R1340) which is fun and cheap( $32.00) but want a Merlin. The Benedini and MR Sound RC systems are nice but I don't want to pay that much. USD ~ $150.00

Keep em coming !

Chellie had a link to a USA company ... RC-Smoke I think they were called ,,, similar system ..

The canister weighs 18gr or 60gr ... depends on what smoke you want. Plus about 5gr for mount ... and small amount for ignite. Add another 20 gr for small pack and switch ... so I reckon

Igniter + 18gr canister + 9v PP9 battery + switch ... all in about 70 - 100gr.

Nothing really on a well powered model. My biplane at 4kgs will laugh at it !!

Remember also it does 2 canisters if you want at same time !!

I found it. Not sure exactly what I need to make it work. Recon a switch and a 9v battery for the igniter. These guys are mainly into HVAC. http://rcsmoke.com/

Might give it a go. I think I can get a switch from Tower Hobbies. I can see mounting these to my Great Planes Escapade. Could e fun for special occasions.

Probably one of the electronic ignition kill switches such as sold by RCXel would work to operate the ignitor.

There are many electronic switches intended for turning on/off lighting and other options on RC models.

Should be useful for doing airshow demos and such.

Smoke (especially pyrotechnics) can be a significant added cost if you use it often.

Nigel,

Yep. I bought one on ebay and installed it on my latest little profile F-22 to turn the lights on and off through the TX. Works great. Good idea to use as a switch for an igniter.

I meant the Smoke gear !!

I have the igniter + 9gr smoke cartridges on way to me ... The cartridges are white smoke at 2min duration.
The coloured 4min duration are sold out at present.

2 min is actually not so bad when I think about it. If you are flying for a crowd, how long do you really want ? Most spectators get bored about the 4 - 5 min mark as I found years ago.

The ignite has twin cartridge connectors ... so I could actually have two cartridges set up on the model.

I reckon to mount out each side on lower wing of :

Nigel I've used those smoke cartridges. Be REAL SURE you have some clearance between the tube and anything else. THEY GET HOT!!!

I used them on a Slow Stick, had to add a metal deflector behind the exhaust.
They do put out some serious smoke. For mine I just used a servo to be a switch to light up the igniter.

There is a new system recently out from MrRCSound, looks promising. But would only be something for use in a larger plane as it requires a 6S pack to run it.

When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, in his sleep...... Not screaming like the passengers in his plane.

I shall be testing one before committing to model. I was thinking of a metal spring clip on a ply plate. Originally I wanted to fit to each wing tip.... but now I think it will be under fuselage or strapped to the wire U/C legs.

Went ahead and ordered the smaller 3 minute version from RC Smoke without the electric igniter. Will test just lighting them up on the ground manually. Want to see which colors are most effective and what kind of volume they pump out. The thing about it is, that it's a one and done.

Hey, it's always fun to spice things up a little. Now a V-12 Merlin sound for the new 1450mm Mustang would be nice but they are expensive.

I have a box of 10 x 2min white coming - the colours were not all in stock .. so thought better to trial with cheap whites and then make selection later on colour.
