Default $75 Build Contest- X47B-UCAS

Okay folks,
I’m going to build the Northrup Grumman X-47B- UCAS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_X-47B

It’s now been successfully catapult launched and landed on the Navy’s USS Harry S. Truman and USS George W. Bush. Our tax dollars at work ! The program only cost about $1B thus far. Not too bad considering everything else.

My budget is tight but doable. A late entry, but I think I have a chance of getting her built and flown within the prescribed March 1 deadline.

I have the plans from “crispy” who has a business called: http://foamconceptjets.yolasite.com/
The BOM is rather simple:

Elmers foam board ( ~ $ 8.00 from Wal*Mart)
70mm edf w/ 60amp esc combo ( $50.00 from Hobbypartz.com)
(2) 9g servos ( included in Hobbypartz pkg)
Rods, horns, connectors ( already have)
20 oz Styrafoam cup for nacelle ( $2.00 from Dollar Tree )
Plans from foam concept jets – ( $10.00)
RX- Lemon ( already have)
3300mah 4S 40C CHL lipo ( already have)

So, I’m right at about USD $70.00 . Pretty unique foam jet in that it uses a removable thrust tube that can be transferred to other models in his very cool line up. One motor/esc services several jets with a quick change over.

As a special helper, Crispy has produced a series of Youtube build vids I can use as a reference when I have a question.

Here’s his flight demo: http://youtu.be/jqHbVeNk8f0

Will start cutting foam parts this week.
-Hawk

Foam Board Color choices. Thinking about a Red Arrows version but I'm not sure if the Royal Navy is ready for this one yet- LOL Maybe a combo of colors.

Red Arrows scheme? That implies an interesting future for the military aerobatics teams of the world!

I thought electronics don't count in the cost. Does that include motor/esc, too?

Naw, It's an unmanned. Just razzing Nigel.

In fact, they had intended to use head sets like FPV setups. HUD and all. NFO flies plane from Deck. Not sure if they are still going that route.

On the electrics, the 70mm EDF w/motor, esc and 4 servos come as a combo package from Hobbypartz.com (Nitro). Take that out of the equation and my cost is less than $20.

power system and electronics are not part of the build cost, just what ever it takes to build a ARF aircraft. that is part of the build cost. what is marked in red above does not apply to the build cost

Oh. But it was funny to imagine F-47's (Former X-47) in Blue Angels color schemes. Someone on the ground presses a button, they fire up, a computer announces the amazing preprogrammed flight routine they automatically fly. Quite comical to me, but people nowadays seemed to be more amazed by the technology to do that than actual people having the skills and cajones to do it. It seems that's where a lot of people in the hobby are heading with the drone fad. I just got back from the hobby shop, and once again I got to overhear a conversation between an employee and someone who knows nothing about the hobby wanting a heli he could set to go on a gps miles away...

Sorry for the distraction! Good luck with the build! I think I saw the video of this plane by the guy making the planes. Looks like a real performer!

Pretty cool how Northrup designed this for carriers. Clever guys.

I've built several profile "prop in the slot" jobs. Can make those in my sleep. But I thought this one had some creative features like a real KF airfoil and transferrable 70mm edf module. Plus, it looks like it flys like a scalded cat! 4S power on a foam board foamie. Oh yeah ! Start cutting tomorrow.

Cutting begins. A lot of angled cuts. PITA but critical. Detrum 70mm edf, 60amp esc and 4 servo combo arrived today. Yay ! Back at it tomorrow . More cutting and fitting. Hope to get to transferrable edf setup this week.

Plans over foam board

Made Dihedral fixture- Top side is white

KF Airfoil cut out and glued to bottom w/ 5 min epoxy

Cutting out our elevons.

More pics tomorrow. Almost finished. I must say the build guide was a big help. I still had a to re-do a few things. Tested the 70mm/edf combo and it has awesome thrust.

The real McCoy does not have V-stabs. This one does. I don't have a fast enough processor for the fly by wire system.

WIP. Adding servos and some more color tomorrow. I have a hunch that with the KF airfoil and the 70mm power, this baby will be fast. WTS is also building one so we can fly these in formation. Set up for 3300mah 4S 40C.

I'm at $20.00 and holding.

Ready for Maiden. If she flies as good as the designer Crispy's, she'll be a screamer. +100 mph territory. But initial impression is that she seems heavy. Need to measure AUW.

I like the transferrable 70mm edf/esc setup should I decide to build another Crispy designed plane like hit batman or F-117. It's plug 'n play. With some dihedral and a KF airfoil, she should fly nicely.

But we all know it's not always the plane. It's the planee LOL

Kept the expenditure to less than $20.00.

I never inhaled. Really

Here she is. Mission accomplished. She bloddy flew. Now I didn't say she flew well....

About $20, not counting the electrics. I made 3 attempts to fly . The first two were not successful. Back flip to a full gainer .

On the 3rd and final attempt ,there was hope, going up against a stiff breeze. With more time to experiment, I'm sure she could have been trained to fly well.

I do think there should be some recognition and possibly a consolation prize for the ugliest plane entered in the contest. I would win hands down- LOL

So now I have the ingredients for another 70mm edf , maybe even a nice kit.

Good luck to the real contenders out there. Mine turned out to be a pretender

it looked to be a little tail heavy, add some nose weight to it and give her another go balance it wing tip to wing tip.
