Default China Hobby Line LiPo's vs others ?

I've been trying to sort my source for LiPos ... since the crackdown on Dangerous goods recently that affected LiPo shipping.

China Hobby Line was always url'd in my favourites but never dealt with them.

I have been comparing prices and claims of batts between CHL and HK ... and CHL appears to be winning the race.

CHL do high C rated packs as well as the lower common ones. I realise that HK offers out some real cheap 2200's etc, - but once shipping is thrown in ... they no longer remain the cheap bargain anymore.

So my question is : Who uses China Hobby Line low and high C rated packs .. ?

What's the verdict ?

Really need to sort out my next supplier !!

Before people start throwing out names like Gens Ace etc. - I live in Latvia where ALL Lipo's are shipped in ... so shipping charges dictate a lot of the choices !!

Cheers
Nigel

Nigel,

This is a softball question for me. I'm a big fan of CHL and highly recommend them. In the States, it's best prices, free shipping and excellent service. The US warehouse is in Beverly Hills, CA of all places. I guess they like to hang out with movie stars.

Batteries is all they do covering the entire gamut. They'll even build custom lipos upon request. I believe that Internationally, they'll ship to just about anywhere, even Latvia and Timbuktu. Jason is very responsive to emails.

Quality wise, I've not had any issues yet. Impressed with the overwrap packaging. Been using them since early this year. They perform great. Unlike the much touted nano techs, they hold their charge and don't drop off after a few uses. Been using their 4S 3300mah 30 and 40 C's. have a few 3700mah 3S 30's . Also have a few 1300mah 3S 30C's and a couple 4S 1000mah 30C's. They do come equipped with a Deans connector up to 4000mah. Over 4000mah, there's no connector. I use two way adaptor plugs for my planes that have esc's other than Deans.

They even include a little free gift with the order. A package of AA alkaline's. Why? I don't know. Just a nice touch. They keep a fairly good stock available and announce sales regularly.

I've pretty much standardardized on CHL.

That's my half a six-pence worth. I'd give them a try for your own comparison and see if you like them. I have no way to measure IR, nor do I want to, but someone will do the light bulb test.

I have been using the 3s 2200 mah 30c battery and have been very happy with them. The customer service was great when I ordered a 4c 3000 mah battery. They called my house to make sure it was all right to ship the battery as they ran out of the wrap with their company logo on it. They where concerned that I might be upset that it was a black wrap with just the battery info on it. That floored me not used to a vendor that would take the time to call.

Nigel I am not one to test out the battery as some folks do, but I will say that they are holding up good they over a year old, and going strong. I am sure you would be ordering from their China location, and I can't speak for that locations service.
Next time I charge them I will check the IR my cellpro charge does this, and I will add it to this.

Hawk I like the fact that they do give you the AA alkaline batteries. Seems it is their way of saying we appreciate you as a customer.

That's my half a six-pence worth.
Blimey .... there was a movie called Half a' sixpence !! Actually not a bad musical.

Anyway - tks for quick replies ....

Just a comparison :

Prices incl. cheapest shipping option to Latvia ... (CHL from International, HK from EU)

2200 3S 30c :

HK : $34.79
CHL : $26.08

1300 3S 40C :

HK : $30.10
CHL : $27.88

Will check later what multiple packs in a shipment does ...

Pretty good. Just send an email to Jason@chinahobbyline.com and he'll get back to you. Mention you heard from Dave in Texas and I'm sure he'll raise his price !- LOL

I do odd work in Singapore - so may look at what I can get there next time ...

Get hold of some Singa's model people - get some advice.

Bit wary of checked bags though ... I used to carry an inflatable life-jacket ... perfectly legal if gas cylinder is 30gr. Every time I checked in - I'd have to go to baggage handling to open the bag to show the cylinder ... they X-ray all bags - not only the carry-ons now.

Hi Nigel, I can also say I've had very good service from Jason at CHL.....I don't run my batteries hot nor to LVC but I DO expect them to hold a reasonable voltage during their timed flights
I run from little 350mh 3s up to 2200 3s, I have bought approx 10 batteries in all and had one that was a little weak (1300 3s) that Jason replaced completely on his dime, told me to keep the orig. I believe they are a good quality, reasonably priced product with a great customer service base

I've only used CHL's smaller 2-cells (≈ 800mAh). I love them, except ... they are a weird size. I've had to modify some planes and others just can't use them, because they were built around the 'normal' size LiPos.

Default CHL looks like the choice

Shipping lipo's to Canada likely creates some of the same shipping barriers as you experience Nigel.

I just did up orders from CNHL vs HK to see the difference in shipping costs.

2200 mah 3S, 40C pack, turnigy vs. CNHL, both out of US warehouse.

HK battery is $20.23 which $5 more than CNHL.
HK shipping is $32.90!
CNHL shipping is $14.95

The difference is shipping is an extra CNHL battery. Not to mention that if I buy two packs, the shipping is still....$14.95.

Flying more, crashing less. Feels great!

The situation is very different depending on where you are. CHL makes a lot of sense if you are in the USA because they have an outlet there. But for other parts of the world when you add the cost of international shipping, plus likely import duties its not so attractive.

UK of course also has HK warehouse ...

For me - it's becoming a real pain .. as there are no warehouses even across the nearest border.

Lithuania has a HK 'shop' one that has turned over to affiliate ... but it doesn't have the gear ...

I'll add the cost of getting the same LiPo from the UK Hobbyking warehouse to any address in the UK (also note that imports from China to Europe are liable to 20% VAT, if you get 'caught')

2200 3S 30c :

HK : $34.79 (plus 20% tax)
CHL : $26.08 (plus 20% tax)
HK UK Warehouse = $19.25 (including 20% tax)

1300 3S 40C :

HK : $30.10 (plus 20% tax)
CHL : $27.88 (plus 20% tax)
HK UK Warehouse = $18.00 (including 20% tax)

It's international shipping that kills the deal so buying from China Hobby (in China) doesn't really make any sense if you have a decent low cost seller closer at hand.

Nigel, does it not work out cheaper for you to buy LiPos from the UK or European warehouses? I know that they don't have quite the same stock levels but there is still plenty of choice on LiPos. Or surely there are other European dealers offering decent prices?

Hi JPF ...

My original post prices are EU warehouse ... not Hong Kong.

But there also is the problem of range ... many of the sizes I want are just not there in EU W/H or NL or UK.

Believe or not - I have had trouble trying to order from UK W/H to Latvia .. as HK tries to make you use either the designated 'local' W/H or international.

...

Ahhh, ok. The postage is obviously very high even for 'within Europe' shipping, that's a real pain.

The difference between HK Euro and China Hobby is roughly equal to the VAT that by rights you would pay when you imported the China Hobby batteries.

Depends on if China Hobby are prepared to mark down the value on the package (which is of course illegal) plus a bit of luck if you can get away with importing them without VAT being added by customs.

The VAT side is the question ....

HK marks as Gifts ... and no-one questions it in Latvia. Only time you get hassle is when anyone uses DHL Latvia ... then it's a real PITA ...

DHL takes the money for Door to Door service - but forces receivers in Lv to go to Riga Airport to clear the items ... 3hrs drive there .. 2hrs fluffing about with Customs forms ... 3hrs drive back.

Trouble is if Courier is used - we cannot advise to NOT use DHL as final service.

OK ... checked multiple as per an order that I would be looking at in New Year (once winters played its toll on my packs !!)

CHL :

Remarks: ALL PRICES ARE IN USD

CNHL 1300mAh 11.1V 3S 40C Li-Po Battery 2 $11.99
CNHL 1600mAh 14.8V 4S 40C Li-Po Battery 2 $11.99
$47.96 Special discount(10%)

Shipping: Registered Air Mail[LV] Worldwide $26.75
$4.80
_______________________________Total$ $69.91

HK (EU) :

Turnigy nano-tech 1300mAh 3S 25~50C Lipo.. $20.46
Turnigy nano-tech 1600mah 4S 25~50C Lipo.. $27.72
TOTAL: $48.18

Only shipping option :
Registered (Tracking) Parcel - Netherlands to Latvia $16.93
Total $65.11

I picked CHL at 40C and basically nanotech as available ... I don't believe Nanotech C ratings so IMHO a 40C CHL is about same as the NT of HK...

So HK looks to have it's nose well in front when you consider the possible VAT charges, the hassle with international delivery, and the longer international delivery time.

Bear in mind that CNHL may not 'gift' mark.

I don't think I would have any VAT (it's called PVN in Latvia and 21% !!) problems ...

The killer is the shipping charges add up with CHL ... but HK is charging a single fee up to a set shipping weight.

I hate to say that HK appears to not be stinging on shipping here ... we all shout about them ... but figures don't lie. The advantage appears to be shipping within EU maybe.

Will do a test run - see what happens with VAT (PVN) ............

That's what I've been saying all along. International shipping is expensive these days and you cant realistically blame Hobbyking or any other dealer for it.
