Default Hangar 9 .50 F4U Corsair

I finally got around to assembling my .50 size Hangar 9 F4U Corsair that my wonderful family gave me last March. I had been eyeing it for a long time and when they put them on sale for $119 I just couldn't resist.

Well, it's a Hangar 9 ARF, so the build was very uneventful. No real reason to take pictures at all.

I used the recommended setup:
Power .46 motor from E-flite.
Castle Creations 75 Amp ESC.
Castle Creations 10A BEC.
Recommended servos all around.
Now I just need to buy a 4 cell 4000mAh 30C battery.

The fit and finish on this bird are phenomenal. I am very excited about the maiden flight. For anyone who doesn't know this, my wife gets to pick all of my pilots.
She enjoys it and I never complain, even though I would have liked someone a little bit more scale than Snoopy.

Anywho, here are some pictures.

Thanks rcers and wts. I have to order a couple of batteries for her and then get ready for the maiden flight.

I'm already nervous about it!

I would be nervous also! Beautiful Corsair I ways loved this war bird, and your lucky to have family buying you planes. Myself I always fly a plane I can warm up on first then fly the new one.

Well you will have a big grin on your face once you have her in the air and going for a low and slow pass down the runway.

Looking forward to it Max. I have been eyeing this corsair for some time. So I eagerly await your maiden.

Happy flying may your crashes be limited and if they are not limited let them be cool.

Default Ready for the maiden flight!

Thanks Fishbonez. I'm definitely going to be nervous. This is the biggest/heaviest model I have.

I recieved my batteries from Motion RC. I am happy with their web store. Decent prices and fast shipping. Plus it is veteran owned so I will probably give them a lot more business.

So today I wired in the BEC and balanced her for the reccommended CoG (4" from LE).
Some cosmetics were done to the dummy engine and it was secured to the cowl.

The AUW w/ a 4S 4000mAh battery is 6lbs 11 ounces. The battery weighs 14 ounces.

Put her on the Eagle Tree data logger for taxi tests and final power check.

W/ a fresh battery she pulls 56 Amps with 875 watts. not too shabby. That's right at 130 watts/pound. Should be good for scale warbird flying.

Default Flight report.

Well gang, this post has been overdue for quite some time. I've flown this model three times since last August. Today was the first time that I had somebody along to take pictures.

A+++ I Love this Model!!

This bird is very predictable and stable in flight. Responds well to any control input and slows down quite nicely. It's true, this one doesn't need flaps to land. Sure, it would look better and more scale with them, but she slows down quite nicely by just bleeding off speed around the pattern.

It's a good sport model, but she is a heavy(ish) warbird. Chop the throttle and in about two seconds you start to lose altitude fast.

Anywho, here are some pictures from today.

Now I am saving up for E-tracts!

Default Now with video goodness!

I finally broke down and created a youtube account.

Here is a small edited video of last Sunday's flight.

I am really digging this model. 10 flights in the logbook and she is very dependable and stable.

Default Still going strong.

I've gotten 12 more flights in the logbook with the Corsair. She is doing great with no troubles at all.

I am asking Santa Claus to bring me E-Flite E-tracts for Christmas.

Thanks, FB! This is the flagship model for my little fleet. She's easy to fly.

You just have to remember that she's a true warbird when it comes time to land. Let it slow down too much and she'll stall in a heartbeat. I've got the scuffed wings to prove it!

Hi Mongo, we should hook up sometime. It's been too long! These pictures are from last year. After they kicked the construction into high gear I haven't even tried to fly on that road for a long time.

The low price is a double edge sword. Horizon Hobby will drop the price of a model by a large amount when they are discontinuing it. It empties out the stock really quick. But the down side is the model is in fact discontinued and replacement parts get very scarce very fast.

I didn't know that Duncan had a club! Do they have a website?

I didn't know they had a field either, but he says its really nice with paved runway an they fly just about every Saturday out there according to him, he's going to take me over an show me when we have a calm weekend, yea right!!! Mean while I think I found a place to fly just north of the house, North/South road with open fields on both sides, need to go look at it again an make sure it will work. I'd love to see the Corsair fly especially since you added retracts.

John, it's great to be back. Just got back from Fredericksburg. Went out there to fly with Dick, but the wind was getting to be a bit much. I haven't flown in over a year, lol. But I picked up a PZ Corsair, GP U-Can- Do 3D, GP F-16 and the E-Flite Apprentice. I'm loving it, lol. I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread old friend.
