Default $100 Twin Build Contest Batplane

http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...0&d=1397530097

Going to design as I build with the PDF (provided by DEG) as the only part of the design I didn't do on my own.

Plan is:

Build a small flat plate based glider to experimentally determine CG (scrap card stock)

Cut the bat symbol and vertical stabs from 1 inch pink insulation foam.
Cut parts to make the fuselage "box" from scraps of the pink foam.
Insert 1/4 inch dia fiberglass (bike pennant) rod as main spar and possibly other reinforcements to keep the wing stiff.
Place the EDF units, servos and electronics to get appropriate CG
Build ducts around the EDFs (probably a couple of styro soda cups involved here)
liberal use of knife and sandpaper to finish shaping.
Cut in the control surfaces and hinge them
Add landing gear.
Pray that battery placement gets me back on CG
Spray paint and fly.

Actually not starting yet...
I am spearheading (herding cats would be more organized) our local club's participation in a full scale airshow with RC model demonstrations 2-4 May.

Good idea for a build, how large is it going to be?

1400 mm span, appx 680 mm length

Twin 70 mm EDFs on 4S (4000 to 5000 mah tested to be appropriate for about 4 min flights using these fans in the plane they came from)

The size of planes I like Not too cumbersome to carry, yet handles the wind well. Good luck with the build, really want to see how it turns out.

Interested to see how you lay it out ... ie control surfaces etc.

It's an interesting concept and one that is making me consider dropping my TU144 and choose something else more 'interesting' !!

Watching with great interest !

I live by the river with quiet stretch of it for my yacht ... and I think often about building a model boat in foam ...

I used to run model boats ... Veron Police Launch with OS 10, MFA Spearfish with Merco 60, County Class Destroyer with twin electrics etc. when I lived in UK.

Sorry back to Batplane !!

I should have mentioned that the Bat Boat is a flying boat - along the lines of the Hydro craze from a few years back. Best (or worst) of both worlds The Bat car flew too, but the boat was way cooler and more fun.

(sorry for the hijack!)

Just bought the "pink" (its purple) foam... $16 for a 4 ft X 8 ft sheet. I'll use slightly more than half of it.

OK..

Step 1: Print reduced scale bat symbol and make a test glider to get ballpark for CG.

This worked REALLY well. One rough guess at CG and I had it gliding across the room. Stuck a screwdriver that came with a Dynam ARF in as the nose weight.

And there's the 70mm EDFs that will go in the big one. I also plan to install retracts.

(Still just $16 spent so far)

Got the tiled printout for the big one.... 24 sheets of paper :p

I cut the small one out on my bandsaw. The big one won't fit. Cutting it out will take a while.

Holy overkill Batman! (Ok, I realized that's your chuck glider next to those 2 edf's as I was typing that, but someone had to do it! )

Been playing around more with the chuck glider... added verticals and shaped the plate to give it some reflex. Now it can be tossed for a flight across the front yard.

CG might not be ideal since it goes through a stall-dive sequence. Or maybe I have too much reflex. It should be controllable if I put a micro RC system on it, so close enough.

Trying to piece together the 24 sheets for the big one... is a pain. I think I'll go to a drafting company and have them print it.

Kinkos will print pdf's to any scale you want. Prices vary a LOT from one store to another, so its worth calling around first. I printed some plans a year or so ago that was about 36" x 42" for about $3/page. I was quoted anywhere from there on up to $12/page.

I think I need a signature.

I wouldn't call that a hijack. Looks really cool Larry!

The contest project also looks like it will be really interesting.

Yeah 24 sheets is about my limit. Done that more times than I care to think about!

Not really working on it much...

Located the styro cups to use for EDF efflux cones. $1.50 for a pack of 20. I'll use 2.
Stacked all of the servos and such in a pile.
That's about it so far.
