The Airbus 380 is of course the worlds largest passenger aircraft, with the Antonov 225 the largest cargo aircraft with even it's own crane gantry inside.

The Antonov 124 is more often seen as more were built, there is only one 225 and that was resurrected from '12 years' standing as scrap in Ukraine.

The 225 story is one of outright 'We WILL build her' .... guts and determination in the latter years of Soviet Union. Built to service the Soviet Space program - she was scrapped when Space program was cut back by Yeltsin. Stripped and left a shell in Ukraine, the 225 awaited the privatisation of Antonov Co. and the vision of providing huge lifting capability. The amusing part is that the American Space Program provided the core impetus to get her back in the air again. The 225 is unique in that it is the only aircraft to be able to carry such loads. They joke that it's 'baby sister' the 124 can be put inside - wings slid in beside of course !

I've watched both the 124 and 225 and the 225 is a sight to behold ...

The other amazing fact of course is that the 124's and 225 were designed not only for smooth surfaces but also rough if called for military duties.

Nope, because it doesn't exist other than in an artists impression and a (relatively) small scale 50ft long RC controlled test model.

If you count an artist impression as qualifying then I'll draw a bigger one and take the record off them

The odd thing (though not unusual on these type of projects) is that in the news article on BBC made back in January 2011 they claimed that the full size thing would be flying by summer (of 2011).. Clearly something went wrong, the company founder died the previous year, that might have been the problem? There doesn't appear to have been any 'new news' since 2011.

I've seen 124s in Ft. Worth, Houston and Kandahar. Pretty impressive aircraft, but I'd like to see a 225 in person.

I have photos on my mobile of a 124 heading out for take-off at Houston ...

The 124's are often over that way based on lifts for NASA ...

The 225 is harder to get to see as there is only one !

I have seen 124's at Phoenix Sky Harbor, Ontario CA, and at the 1987 Paris Air Show.

At Paris, there was low cloud cover the entire weekend I was there (like 3000'). The guy flying the demo kept it below the ceiling FOR THE ENTIRE FLIGHT!

I have about 5 rolls of 35mm stills sitting in a box. I need to scan some and post them up.

And I'd love to see the 225 someday. I missed it at the 1989 Paris show because I was back in the States.

JPL....you might look into this a little further, check the previous link I posted and watch the video....it's a full scale version (not exacly the version shown in the rendering):

These are recent events related to that craft.
