Default Local Arrested for flying quad

Up in the town of ulster, NY, a gentleman was arrested yesterday as he was flying his video equipped quad along the fourth floor windows of a medical practice. Looking into patient exam rooms. His mother was in one of the rooms but the guy thought he'd fly around anyway. He's 49. What a giant putz! Some more amateur flying. Some more negative press for our area.

Said the man upon arrest:

But then said he'll be flying again:

"...Beesmer, who appears unbowed by his arrest. “I will not stop droning....this is the wave of the future...and I WILL be a part of it,” he declared...."

Yeah
We can have 10,000 people flying FPV with absolutely zero issues, but the newsmedia will only write about the one person doing something stupid with them.

Bottom line, be careful out there, you never know who, (or what) is watching you.

(Nope, I don't do FPV!)

The FAA hasn't gotten involved in this one.... yet. Since its inside the 30 days of the new NPRM, they'll probably not get involved.

They are using state and local laws regarding invasion of privacy. Since they are charging him with a felony I expect he'll be doing some time behind bars.

I think the content of the video is going to determine what he gets, as well as his attitude. If it's just tooling around and and all types of shots, i doubt they will do more than fine him and give him probation. If however he actually targeted an office and was hovering there trying to get video, that's a whole different story. And to top that off, his claim that he will "drone" again. Then he'll pay dearly. I doubt that's the case though. It's hard to see into a building, and a specific office like that. Article didn't say he was flying FPV, so it might have been LOS. Either way, someone inside saw the thing tooling around and got spooked.

I think initially the FAA will look for a select few cases to start hammering on if for no other reason than publicity and a warning to others. Town and cities and such are already drafting specific language to deal with it, but then again the cops can always fall back on reckless endangerment, or disturbing the peace as "catch all".
