Default Need help picking out a radio.

Would like some help on something.

My current radio just kicked the bucket after several years of abuse so I need a new one. The problem is that while I need some upper end functions, I also need to keep it on a very tight budget.

What I need is as follows - Must have EPA, Digital Trims, Dual rates. These things are manditory. Other things that would be nice, but not 'must haves' are: exponential, mixing, 5th or 6th channel.

It seems that to get the features I want, I need to goto a 6channel computer radio. These offered from JR, Futaba, and Hitec are all around the 200-240 range.

Anyone know of a way to get a radio that will suit my needs for the 100-150 range? I need only a TX/RX. I have checked around the forums for used systems, but it seems all that is for sale are radios designed for nitro planes, which all come with a receiver that is just huge!

Ideas, recommendations?

I think for what you require and the price range, it might be best to continue to monitor the FS forums on said sites. I sold my JR 8103 when I upgraded to the 9303 for $150.00. That seemed to be the going rate at the time for that Radio.

Mike - That is what it seems to me as well. I purchased the JR I have now for 179.00 new and it is a computer radio but doesn't have DR or Mixing. I don't think they make it anymore though.

If you decide that you want a JR 6102 for example and dont want the servos or reciever, Cliff at Atlantahobby.com can order just the radio for you.

Mike - servos are not manditory, but the receiver is. I would probably need several receivers if it has a multi model memory, which would be a great feature. The crazy thing is, that due to the high cost of receivers, I wonder what would be better? Several cheaper radios, or a decent one and multiple receivers.

Update - Found a seller that I have just spoke with a few times and here is what he has:

Futaba T6EXAS Transmitter
Hitec RCD3800 Rcvr

I can purchase this package for 95.00 shipped and according to him, it has never been used. TX was used for a simulator only. Good feedback too.

Is this worth it? I looked online at Tower, it seems to be a pretty good radio.

Futaba 7CAP. Fantastic radio with simple programming. I bought mine off ebay, brand new, shipped for $150. 7 channels, more options than the 6 (better free mix and tripple rates if memory serves). I don't think I'll ever need another radio... this replaced a Futaba Attack 4 that I made do for at least 10 years worth of flying. I went computer Tx simply because it's hard to set up the small things without EPA and dual rates. Everything else was a bonus, and protection from having to by another radio in the future.

I dig my Tx.

I'd also choose to go the nice Tx over many cheapies, simply because you get to take advantage of the higher end features on every plane you fly.

Only way to go is the Optic 6 with Spectra. Easy to use and affordable. Try one before you make a mistake and get something else.

I have two of those. I love 'em. I have never had a problem with either. Not the easiest radios to program but not a big problem. Make sure you get the manual with it.

Wow! I think that may be my next one. Synthesized TX, under $200, cool!

I agree, The Optic 6 is a great value in a Transmitter. Lots of abilities for $169! The JR 6102 Mike apoke of is also a great value at $239 with 4 241 servos and the micro 6 chan receiver.

I will be selling my Hitec Eclipse 7 when I receive it back from Hitec. I sent it in to have it checked out and have the battery cover plastic replaced. Its a 7 channel, digital trims, EPA, Expo, mixing capable. Has the spectra module so that it can be any channel. Even lets you program positive or negative shift. Has a 7 model memory. I wanted to sell it for $150. I even have the original box and manual and I have upgraded the battery from the 600ma Nicd pack to a 2300 Nimh pack. Comes with wall charger.

It will probably be another week before I receive it back from Hitec.

Cliff is excellent to deal with also. Luckily he is local to me.

Sounds like the Optic 6 is a good deal too especially if it is new.

You won't beat that deal on Ebay..but everything is negotiable! Always get insurance on transmitters when shipped! Those little toggles break easily and the USPS can cover the cost of just the repair!

Hobby people occasionally sells the Optic 6 with synth for $139. I got one when my JR 421 died, and it's a very good radio.

Anyone know a shop that sells multiple radios as just a TX or TX/RX set?

WOW thatsa great deal, with I had the Money I am flying my fathers old Hitec Prizam witch still works fine but only has 3 model memory my father has the Hitec Eclipse and loves it,its a great radio he also just finally after waiting 8 months got his new Polk Radio, this radio is great,if you can get on it is a 8 channel and its only $180.00 with the small light weight 6 Ch RX.

This radio has a 99 model memory and you can mix any channel with any other channel and the best part is it has a built in scanner thatscans the channels for a free on and will tell you if one your allready to set on or another is in use.
http://www.polkshobby.com/index1.html

Oh yeah.it doesnt use any cystals or anything.it will scan for any plane you have on any channel and find it you can fly any plane with it.the receiver that comes with it and you can buy more of for $60.00 no cystal you have a shorting button you press after you cut on the TX to program the channel you want to fly on.w/o the button pluged into the RX it weighs
half a ounce.youonly need the buttom pluged in to program the channel ones programed it stays on that channel.

Well - I ended up getting a radio today!

Was at the LHS and they had a new JR XP652 available that I was able to purchase for 100.00

Does all the things I wanted it to, and will work with my other JR equipment I already have!

Right now - We don't have a radio section, but should be adding it soon - for the time being, just post in the general forum.
