E-power MODEL > Mach 1 is going to be a LONG way off... They are only up to appx 475 mph record for a turbine powered model. (not approved by AMA as there is a 200 mph limit for turbine models) And that would just about require it to be FPV, which will be a problem due to the recent FAA "interpretation" of rules.

There is the basic issue of "pitch speed" limiting the max speed of E-power. In order to get the airplane > Mach you have to have the prop spinning fast enough and props (especially small ones) get very inefficient at the rpm needed plus you'd just about have to make the prop from titanium to handle the stress.

Dynamic soaring models go faster than the theoretical max for a prop driven model using any commercially available propeller.

Its nice to come up with ideas... but they need to be somewhere within the realm of possibility when considering the laws of physics.

I like the idea, but in light of recent FAA actions and the bad press the hobby as been getting lately, I'd go for something less extreme and potentially dangerous.

I would take a different route. Think along the line of the hobby helping at-risk kids to find an interest in technology and aviation or disabled veterans finding a new hope or something like that. Positive things that no-one can have an issue with.

I personally think flying a plane across the US would be a terrible idea right now. Given that the FAA has a problem with planes flying outside the line of sight, I would imagine they'd shut down any attempt at flying a plane for tens of miles.

Going beyond where we are now basically means going into the realm of UAV/UAS/Drones in a time when FAA is cracking down.

At best its just a bad time for the idea.

Exactly! I get frustrated when people are saying the FAA is trying to kill the hobby. I don't think that's at all what they're doing. They are worried about where RC flying is going, not where it's been. Until recently, RC used to be a bunch of old guys flying warbirds in circles over some cornfield. That's pretty much all you could do with that generation of technology and the FAA couldn't care less. What the FAA is worried about is where the technology is going with autonomous drones and FPV vehicles capable of flying at several thousand feet and many miles out. Innovation is what the FAA is afraid of.

And while I'm a big fan of innovation, I think right now is a really bad time to show the world how far we can take the hobby. Instead, right now is the time to show how the hobby plays a meaningful role in our communities and how it brings people together.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. Stepping down from soapbox now.

Uhm... I didn't mean to shut you down. I think there's a ton of positive things we can do with your idea.

It's all good. It was a gonner by post #2 anyway.

I can always get ideas from another forum.

Chit chat threads are always so much more popular than actual advice or research threads.

Is it football season yet?

Might have worked better in the Off-Topic Chit-chat forum. Then again, maybe not.

It was in the appropriate forum but since it got way off topic, I removed the OP since there was no way it was ever going to get back on topic. Forums are just that way. One wrong turn and your done.

It's no big deal though. I was hoping for better but it is what it is.

But isn't a chit chat thread fun? Good way to build up your post count.

I'll ask the mods to move this thread.

When you go to the field, be sure to bring all the required stuff. Like the canopy of your model!

(Yup I did it today, but we had a picnic with lots of food, so all was OK)

Oh yea, that does sound good.

My wife makes green salsa that is absolutely delicious. It is so good that every time I give some to my friends they want to buy a batch. It is made with habaneros and jalapenos and other stuff. Not sure what exactly goes in it, but if you like hot green salsa, you'd love this.

Haha. No doubt! I have forgotten just about everything you could think of to keep from flying.

The worse is leaving my radio at home. I have done that more than once believe it or not. Even though the field was only 12 minutes from the house, it still upsets you.

Sounds great. I like a little spice. I don't believe eating should be painful! Like have you seen Man vs Food when the guy does a hot wing challenge but can't do it? Ugh! Suicidal. And we only see the part where he consumes it....

Yea, I don't eat hot just because it's hot. When it is too hot, it just isn't tasty anymore.

I really like Buffalo Wild Wings crispy chicken salad flavored with their hot sauce mango something. Anything hotter than that for me is too hot and doesn't taste good.
