Cool Unlimited Sailplane Contest Sept 20/21 2014 LI, NY

The Long Island Silent flyers has been hosting Eastern Soaring League TD events for decades. We hold two of these weekends each season, June and September. Each weekend is made up of two 1 day contests. Typically we have 20 to 40 pilots at these contests.

Spectators are welcome and are FREE!

Registration will be at the Eastern Soaring League site: http://www.flyesl.org/Contest.aspx?contestid=170

Who can compete? Any AMA member who has a glider that can be launched from a winch. If you normally launch from a hi-start and don't know the winch, no problem. We will help you launch your glider. Many experienced pilots prefer this approach.

We will be flying man on man format which means that we will launch 3-5 pilots in a flight group and their score will be based on how they score compared to other pilots in that flight group.

Once you are in the air you will be flying a timed task, typically 10 minutes, looking for thermals to keep your glider in the air. For the best score, at exactly 10 minutes, you want to land you glider inside a circle that is 200 inches across. Put the nose of the glider in the circle for landing points.
You will be working with a timer who will time your flight and who can help you. You can bring your own timer or we will provide one. There will be multiple gliders in the air at the same time so you should feel comfortable flying with other pilots. And if you are not so confident of your landings we have plenty of space where you can land away from the other pilots.

Whether you have flown in contests before or this will be your first, you are welcome. You can register as an Expert, a Sportsman or a Novice. You can read more about how we define the classes here: http://www.flyesl.org/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=263 Note that Novice pilots fly free!

You can find more about the host club, the Long Island Silent Flyers here: www.lisf.org

No matter what class you fly you are sure to have a good time.

The ESL posts the contest schedule around January each year. Every year I watch the registration count bump up to about 12 to 15 and then just sit and sit for months. And then, about 10 days before the contest it starts to build again. The ESL TD contest at LISF has now reached 21 pilots and I expect many more.

As usual, for those who arrive on Friday, the field will be open for practice at noon.

Then, if you are hungry, it is back to my house for burgers and dogs and whatever else my wife puts out. Just some relaxing time in the yard. All are welcome.
