Alan's story is so typical of how many of us started in this great hobby - his Super Cub saga is here:

I wish I had Alan's backyard!

Well I started around 1961 with a home made single channel outfit.

A mini valve rx with a single germanium transistor amplifier, a 22v and 1.5v battery was required. The tx stood on the floor next to the 110v battery, with a lead up to the OXO tin containing the 'controllers'.

The control was pulsed rudder, well with only one channel it was either on or off, so the rudder was rubber band biased one way, (off), and a geared electric motor pulled it the other way, (on). By pulsing the signal, (a few more transistors), you could fly straight, (at least sort of straight).

With no 'trims' on the tx and only rudder, the model had to be accurately trimmed for power on and for the glide. Once you started the motor, (a glow or diesel), and let go, you had to fly it until the motor ran out of fuel.

Great days, great fun. But I'm sure glad of todays rc gear.
