View Full Version : Private Message E-mail Alerts

I currently have it set up to get an email alert when a private message hits my inbox. Is there a way I can have the message sent to my cell phone instead? I could change the email address on file to my cellular number, but I would rather get member emails and Wattflyer updates in my AOL mail, and PM alerts sent to my phone as SMS messages.

Interesting. I like this idea.

Perhaps the ability to have more than one email address to send alerts to, and the ability to choose what alert goes to what email addy.....that would be sweet!

Mods,

Please delete the above abusive post, from some guy who hasn't regularly posted in ages, and is OBVIOUSLY making detrimental statements about our beloved Wattflyer. ;)

Dave,

Do you get text messaging? If so, you can set it up so the email account you send alerts to is the one your cellular provider uses to send you SMS (or text) messages......if you send an email to [email protected], where the 6305551212 is replaced with your telephone number, it will be sent as a text (SMS) message. Just put that in as the email address you wish alerts to be sent to.

If your email is always on, you could use a forward rule. Add one that says If <Private Message at WattFlyer> is in the subject line, forward to [email protected]

Not sure what ISP you use, but with AT&T email you can setup a filter and then have emails forwarded to your cellphone based on the filters you applied.

Mike,

In my case (AOL) I can do that, but thought it might be a nice feature for those with email that may not do that.

But, I appreciate that answer, nonetheless. It is a definate solution for some of us. That's why you are (or were, as it appears right now), Da Penguin!

Ill see what I can do. It may be a custom code. Things that come to mind right off is the extra load on the mail server and possible loop holes in security.

But I'll look.

I should have typed webmail in my earlier post. As logging in through the web will give me additional options. Screencap of ATT webmail below:

I just had FM send me a pm. It did forward to my phone, but since SMS only allows so many characters, I did not get the entire message.. Just that there was a PM waiting for me.

If we could shorten the email that is sent that just showed the PM, that method would work great.

Broham,

I get the same thing, just the SUBJECT line of the incoming email.

That, at least, alerts me to check it when I get the chance.....

Geez, I coulda sent ya a PM......LOL

Get you one of these. I'm out of my office quite a bit so I set my e-mail to come to my phone also. Palm uses a Windows based software. Works great.

NUTS,

I have a Blackberry, but I just discontinued the email service. I dont use it enough to justify the cost.....and I am not changing service providers again anytime soon....

Mike,

Today is a perfect example why being able to add a phone number email alias is a good thing.....more often than not, anymore, AOL alerts do not come thru to my phone in a timely manner. I have had a handful of PM's today and not one has hit my phone yet. If they came from Wattflyer, then they would consistently get there ASAP. :)

From what I can find in some heavy reading yesterday, it opens up a security risk in that if someone knows what they are doing, they can leach your phone number from the software. I dont want to be held responsible for that.
It is a good idea though, but I think better left to email filters outside of WattFlyer.
