I was flying my Aerobird out in the rain the other day when one of the control surfaces detached from the tail. I could clearly see it fluttering in the wind. With the little control authority I had, I managed to get it in a downward spiral. Then I noticed a large open top trailer in my flight path. I managed to clear the back, but not the front. Ouch.

Has anyone else had a surface seperate like this? I usually fly with a parachute recovery system for the plane, but since it was raining I didn't. Talk about bad timing.

A prior hard landing can cause this. Or the hinge area can get brittle after a lot of use, maybe 100 flight. You have to check these things.

If it is cracking, use clear packing tape to make a hinge line on one side. Works fine.
