In my research search for good anti-virus software, it was recommended to me that Trend Micro's "PC Chillin" was the best AV software to get. I checked Consumer Reports and they also said the same thing.

For free AV software, AVG came highly recommended.

Hope that helps anyone going down the same road I just went down.

Frank

PS I had Norton which was CR's lowest pick.

Avast! is also a good free AV software, and it doesn't pop-up every day with an annoying "buy me" ad.

One of my favorite antivirus programs is Malwarebytes. (www.malwarebytes.com (http://www.malwarebytes.com)) It is a very thorough, lite, AV program that doesn't take up many resources. It is free to download and use. The purchased edition only adds scheduling, automatic updating and live-guard.

If you are looking for an array of programs.

-HijackThis
-Malwarebytes
-The Cleaner (trial has 15 uses. use it when yout hink you have a virus because its hueristic scanning is rediculously strong (and therefore, it scans at 4files per second).
-ThreatFire
-Panda and/or BitDefender Anti-Rootkit utilities
-A(2) (Asquared) AV

I dont mean to say you should have all of those. (Although i highly recommend the first 2 as they are powerful and free). the Rootkit tools are free too, however Rootkit viruses are rare. It is good to just have it but you wont need to run it often.

I just started using Malwarebytes a few weeks ago. I had several viruses that AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy could not find. Malwarebytes found 54 infected items, cleaned it all out and it's all running smooth again. Good stuff!

I would think twice about the Trend product, I have had first hand experience with this program and the support staff trying to fix my machine after a rather nasty worm got past it. I ended up fixing it myself by googling the symptoms to find MalwareByte and running it to remove 128 different infections all of which got past PC Cillin

ESET Secures Record 53rd Virus Bulletin VB100 Award

December 04, 2008Detects 100 Percent of In-The-Wild and Polymorphic Malware with Zero False Positives
SAN DIEGO – December 4, 2008 – ESET (http://www.eset.com/), the leader in proactive threat protection, today announced it has captured a record 53rd VB100 award from Virus Bulletin (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/about/100use.xml), a widely-respected independent comparative testing group. ESET is still the only company with more than 50 VB100 awards and continues to lead the industry with the highest detection rates with zero false positives – the winning formula in malware prevention. The November 2008 comparative review was conducted on the Windows Vista 64-bit platform, highlighting ESET's continued support for the latest Windows environments.
Virus Bulletin introduced its first VB100 award in 1998, and conducts several comparatives every year, rotating its platforms between Linux, Windows, Windows servers and Novell Netware. In order to display the VB100 logo, an antivirus product must meet two criteria: (1) Demonstrate it detects all "In-the-Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning; and, (2) Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files. Since the inception of VB100 awards in 1998, ESET's antivirus products continue to boast a success rate of over 96 percent - the industry's highest. Most antivirus vendors have success ratios in the 50 – 75 percent range.
"ESET NOD32 Antivirus turned in another solid performance, and detection rates were solid with high marks across the board," said John Hawes, Virus Bulletin. "No trouble with the WildList samples and no false positives means that yet another VB100 award is earned by ESET."
ESET is powered by ThreatSenseŽ technology, an advanced heuristics engine that enables proactive detection of malware not covered by even the most frequently updated signature-based products. Unlike traditional approaches, ESET solutions decode and analyze executable code in real-time, using an emulated environment. By allowing malware to execute in a secure virtual world, ESET is able to clearly differentiate between benign files and even the most sophisticated and cleverly-disguised malware.

I have been running Kaspersky Labs Internet Security http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/internet-security.php
for over three years now. Never a problem, it catches everything. They give real time updates (versus waiting till tomorrow or next week) and have a real nice, for 2009, redesigned user interface.
Works great on my deksktop (pretty powerful) but slows my laptop down a little with a Pentium4.

My brother works (runs) IT security in Wilmington DE. for one of the BIG credit card companies. He showed me this while fixing my mom's computer.

They also have a free on-line scanner. You may want a faster internet connection to use it though.;-)

They are out of Moscow and NOBODY has reverse engineered Windows like the Russians!

I use AVG8 Free and found it very reliable.
I also switched over a number of computers "I'm responsible for" to it.

NOD32 was a great program I haven't used it since v3 since it started using a lot more resources, had some incopatibilities with programs I was using and would sometimes get stuck at 100% cpu usage for no apparent reason.

AVG has the problem of not always updating itslef, if that's a nag it still worth it.

What were these "infections" that got picked up?
Some programs will group tracking cookies along with virus' and spyware.
Tracking cookies are pretty much common now so dozens of them would'nt be abnormal if they weren't cleaned regularly.

My 18 month old system came with PC Cillin, and I downloaded Malwarebytes last night to check it out. It found 0 infections on the system, so I guess PC Cillin is doing its job!

i'm with chellie, i love nod32. i've never actually needed it as i've always believed the best anti-virus is an intelligent end user but since its good practice to have one, i like how lite it is.
