Has anyone converted this plane to electric power? http://www.kmp.ca/rcpics/b25/b25picspecs.htm

I'll be ordering this plane very soon and I intend to convert it to electric power, probably AXI motors. Not being one to try and re-invent the wheel, has anyone electrified one of these planes? Any pointers, tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

At a greater than $600 price tag, I don't think you will find to many, but it should make an excellent conversion.

You may find some of the version HL used to sell:

Here are a couple from the eZone...but none of this exact model.


Let us know when you get the kit, and we can help you with some numbers.

I might also consider the Hyperion motors, they sure are impressive. At any rate, I will make an excellent conversion, but I hope you have a big wad of $$$.

We are converting the KMP B-25 to electric, using 2 Hyperion Z4025-12 and Varioprop adjustable 15" 3-blade props. We have tested the setup and it will work just fine. We are also testing a 14" scale varioprop and a Master airscrew 14"9. We have also started to convert a KMP P-38 Lightning. In this plane we are going to use 2 Hyperion Z4035-10.
I will give you more details when we have made more tests.

On the P-38, the AXI 4130/16 work fine with authourity w/14"/3blade prop. I talked to Hobby Lobby for the setup.

Thanks for replies!

I contacted Hobby Lobby and it turns out that they electrified a KMP B-25 last year with a pair of AXI 4130/16's with Graupner 15X8 props.

Petsamo, is the Varioprop adjustable enough so that the motors can be counter-rotating? Also, how many and what kind of servos will you be using?

Hello again, yes I saw the HL conversion, looked very good.
We are using standard servos exept for the elevator,which has a digital high torque servo.
I will tell you more when the project progress.

about the Varioprops, they can be changed from 4-12 pitch. They have also left-handed props for contra-rotation.

Keep us updated, what a fantastic project. The price isn't too bad considering the retracts are included.

rcer, yeah, the included retracts make the price very reasonable IMHO. I was concerned that the shipping would be really bad but surprisingly, it's only $66 to Pennsylvania.

The other component parts will end up costing much more than the plane.:(

I do a special project for each grandchild (I get the wife's blessing a lot easier that way) and little Caleb is supposed to be the last grandchild so I'm going to do it up right.

I can't wait for grandkids. Well actually I can, but as my first (we have 4 kids) gets ready for college, I can tell that my budget will be severely impacted!

There's a guy who lives locally here who named his access road "Easy Street". Some time ago he added a second sign to his "Easy Street" sign which read "Was Easy Street but Daughter's in College Now".:)

Have you converted the KMP P-38 to electric? If so, I'm dying to hear more as I just took delivery on the ARF and I'm starting to think about motors, ESC's, batteries and props. Please send your setup and some pictures! Its not a KMP B25 but many of the challenges are the same.

the KMP P-38 is converted with 2 Hyperion Z4035-10 and 2 HP TITAN 80 PO Speed Controller. The motors arrived yesterday and we are going to test 2 15" varioprop 3-blade with variable pitch. These blades have been tested on the Z4025-12 with very good results. We used 5s2p getting 9.7 lbs in prop static thrust.

Sounds like plenty of thrust, what will your flying weight be? What is the battery size (Lenght x Witdth x Height ) and where will it be mounted (each boom I presume). I'd love to hear of your progress and some images would be great too. Who out there had experience with Axi 4130's in this P-38?

I am just starting on mine. Let me know how you are making out. I am in a quandry as to whether to put retracts on the bird or not.I am installing two AXI 2814/10 and two jeti 30 Advance plus speed controls and will use a polyquest 4400 battery. It should fly well Jayree

What battery setup are you using with the AXI 4130/16s in the P-38?
