I just bought another one for $48.50 with the shipping included. Yes its red and the rudder is a little big but I plan to make the rudder scale size on this one and either repaint it or recover to do a different DR1. You guys should be checking this sale out!!! This is a well built 40in. ws plane made of balsa for less than $50 including shipping!!! www.polkshobbies.com (http://www.polkshobbies.com) Steve

My triplane from them is a well built good flying plane so I figure the Moth would be too. Yeah the shipping is a little high but its still cheap for these planes. You guys are welcome for the heads up. At these prices I figured I'd give everyone a shot at them!!! Steve

Thanks for the heads up about the sale. I ordered two of the POLK Cubs, a Fokker Dr1 and a Tiger Moth.

I remember 30 years ago as a twelve year old kid, going to the 5 story Polk’s Hobbies store in Manhattan and looking at everything in sheer amazement. I always wanted one of their RC planes.

What power system are using on your triplane?

Also, I'm new to the forum and just wanted say hello! Hopefully, I can make some positive contributions here as well.

Regards,

Anthony

I put a Eflite Power 25 outrunner on mine with a 12x6 prop and it has power to spare!! You could probably get the same size outrunner alot cheaper at www.hobbyking.com (http://www.hobbyking.com). I have some of their gold Turnigy outrunners, and Turnigy ESCs and they have worked great!! I'm gonna find a Turnigy there for my new triplane since I'm on a budget. Steve

I just got off the phone with Gill of Polk's Hobby. He wanted me to tell everyone that they are NOT going out of business, just clearing out stock to make room. He also said that they are breaking off from a particular supplier that they get the items that are on sale. They are going to be carrying their own items instead of someone elses.

Actually, due to the word here and other places, their server that ordinarily handles everything was overwhelmed. They were having a fit when I was on the phone will Gill and trying to get the site fixed. The guy in the warehouse kept yelling.... all in all, quite entertaining to listen to.

I think that they have been swamped.

I placed 2 orders. The site is not showing my orders, but my bank account is showing the payment in process. I'll wait. I'm sure that everything will work out. The just got more business than they are used to in a very short span of time.

I've done business with these guys before and I can tell you that they normally aren't like this!! Something HAS to be wrong with their website because as a rule they offer great service. I've also known guys that needed some kind of assistance with their products and they bent over backwards to help. I think someone earlier was right, they just got swamped with orders or something and aren't used to the heavy traffic. Guess I shouldn't have told everyone about it!! LOL Steve

Swamped with orders, yes. Blame the computer system, no. People go two ways with systems and IT services, either way more than they need or way less than they need. None of which results in taking information then loosing it. If it were one of my companies and data was lost, a few IT people would be looking for work. DOS (swamped servers) is much different from data loss.

They have "someone making" all their radios, probably China. Just another proprietary 2.4G system. No one in the USA "makes" rc electronics. Again, a mom-pop reseller esp. when the planes seemed to be the only thing "made" by someone in the USA they knew. I wonder if the guy left them and now they can't resupply them. Doesn't make much sense to just stop for no reason. Eihter they were junk (not the case acccording to my research) or they can't get them made anymore.

That statement is like saying you hire morons because skilled labor is too expensive. Sorry, but that's business. If you can't make the investment then you are just asking for failure.
BTW, IT services are about the same as auto repair ($100/hr ave.). Do you have the cheapest used car you can find or the most reliable vehicle you can afford and get it serviced properly? If you drive to work I bet you will spend as much as needed.... or loose your job.

I went to a national chain store once and wanted to buy some fishtank backround that came on a roll you had to bring it to the counter to have it cut. When I asked the girl at the checkout (she was about 20 years old) for 3 feet she gave me a puzzled look and said 36 inches in a foot right. I paused smiled and said yes.
As we walked from the store with 9 feet of background I looked and wife and said this country is in big trouble

As an educator I can tell you why. Vocational and private high schools are the only ones where students that are not meeting state and industrial standards can be shut down. A public school or teacher has nothing to fear, except threat of loosing grants. Students know that they will graduate from public school no matter what, so most do very little. Teachers are pressured to pass poor students by school boards and parents.

They still (allegedly)have the Cub. No Tripes or moths left. Never responded to my emails from Thursday, I am ticked that they still had tripes in stock while I was trying to buy one. Seemed like they let a lot of people in line ahead of me because I had a simple question. I hope their store front people (for their sake I hope they aren't on-line only) have better manners. I will not due business with them now anyway.

Last time, the card company took two months to "verify" my claim. Paypal took a little over a week.

That sounds to me like it is time for a different card. I'm not discounting PayPal's security and benefits (I've got over 6K PP transactions). I'm just stating any company that takes 2 months to solve a problem, has gotten 6 weeks of my time that cost them my business. I'd be gone in a flash.

I don't do business with B of A, as a personal choice. This last year, B of A acquired one of my card companies. I cancelled the card. Then, B of A acquired our mortgage loan, so I refinanced. I really mean it when I say I don't do business with B of A.

I am the master of my affairs, not my creditors.

I am not bashing them, just stating that they are a mom-pop type business and that they have poor e-business skills/staff/service.

"Rant On"

So What:rolleyes:
I would much rather have more Mom & Pop's like them than the really poor after purchase support we are getting now.

They must be doing something right to still be in business after all this time.

Too many e-businesses with people there that don't know what they are talking about and don't care and less of those with a proven track record of standing behind everything. Sometimes waiting a little longer is the best in the long run.

I think the problem is today's society is in way to much of a hurry and they need to slow down and enjoy life instead of @#%!*ing all the time because things are not handled as fast as they would like.

They are a dying breed and I for one will miss companies like that when they are all gone.

I might have felt better if I got any response from them ( I was one of the first to try to order a DR.1). They were getting rid of the planes for a reason. It is my opinion they weren't doing that well before the alleged "server overload". You can ignore me or bash me, it doesn't change the fact that regardless of how knowledgeable they are, something is drastically wrong with their business. They are a dying breed for what to me is an obvious reason.

dbcisco... I bet that your glass is half empty isn't it? You are just a bundle of negative energy. Instead of doing nothing at all but complaining and moaning, why don't you call them? That's exactly what I did last Friday when the server went haywire. I picked up the phone and called the company when I had questions. Here's the phone # so that you don't have to inconvenience yourself by looking it up. 973-351-9800 .

So, instead of sitting here beating the hell out of someone, be an adult, step to them, and find out from the source what is going on. I have called them twice to check on my order because the server crashed in the middle of my order. My payment was processed, but the confirmation was cut off. I could be sitting here badmouthing blindly like you are, but I chose instead to try to educate myself on the situation.

What you are doing sir is called SLANDER. Man up and call the company. You may learn something. Personally, I had never heard of them before last Friday, therefore, I was a little concerned when the server crashed. So, I called. I talked to Gill for 45 minutes. Turned out to be quite a helpful and nice guy. Told be what to look for with the planes that I ordered, how many planes that he has, discussed his personal website, what planes I fly, why they were changing their line up, and general chit chat for 45 minutes. Turned out to be a nice coversation with an older gentleman. I actually had to end the call because I was at work.

I appoligize to the other forum readers for my outburst, but I just can't stand dbcisco's complaining and bashing any longer without saying something.

I am not "bashing" anyone, just stating facts. If you have a "contact us" on your website, you should use it. When somonme orders something you should respond, not delete their information. If you want to do e-business then do it, not play at it. If you want to play with the big dogs then at least learn to bark. I don't play with amateurs and posers. My biggest suggestion to them (as a multi-certified IT instructor) pay for trained support people or loose that money (or more) anyway. Good support people will, at the least, double your investment.

I'd really like to get one of their 72mhz radios but there are so many negative posts on the different forums about them I can't bring myself to do it.
Something about the built in scanner and it won't TX till the channel is open but sometimes will cut out if it picks up a channel nearby and off goes the plane to the great rc gods.
I fly at a large open field 25 miles from the closest rc field so I might be ok. They have a 5 year warranty but that doesn't help when you plow a 300 dollar plane.
I wonder how much is the radio and how much is operator error.

much better something would be if only that 'something' were done their way.

And the "new schoolers" are usually correct. That is why so many "old schoolers" are unemployed.
Do you still ride your horse to work? Order from the Sears catalog? Have one of those nice black AT&T phones with the dial? Yeah, us new schoolers really made things worse. What is your profession, have the same skill set and tools as 50 years ago? If so you are one in a million and lucky to have a job.

BTW, us New Schoolers realize that "humans" grow and learn and do amazing things. "Human" is not an excuse to make mistakes. It is an opportunity to make things better for yourself and others.

I can tell you that in the years I have been using my polk(s), I have never lost one to the transmitter issue. I love the radio. I mean REALLY. More than the 5 year warrenty, more than the 100% no questions asked service, more than the 'never wait for a freq'.

I have had one of my radios for about 9 years now. I just sent it in because it had some 'static' on the rt stick. Service? Nope, they sent me a NEW TX. Thats a radio that has been 'out' of warrenty for nearly as long as the warrenty itself.

I have only had 1 issue of it not wanting to initalize, and that was because there was a guy at the field that had a transmitter that was sending out the fattest signal I had ever seen... even other handheld freq scanners were seeing this thing put a signal out across the band many channels wide. In those cases, all I did was turn the TX on with the antenna down. It got its own freq, and I was good to go.

For the current price of $99 the TX IMO is the best deal going. 8ch TX, unlimited models (like 99 wont be enuf).

But the main thing that got me into Polk (aside from my first RC electric controller bought from them some 30 years ago) was Lewis Polk himself. The first time we met in Las Vegas at the Hobby Visions show he gave me over an hour of his time teaching me about the radio. It was not long after that our paths crossed again, and Lewis grabbed me from the crowd as he saw me first. Another long chat of some of the best RC info I'd ever gotten. They then offered me a sponsorship, and have provided me with any radio I needed. I'm on the short list for a 2.4 set. Lewis is one of the best guys in RC, and he truly is 'under-rated', but he is happy with that. Not the Giants of RC, but truly one of the RC companies that is in RC for the RIGHT reasons. Not to become a billionaire, but to make a decent living in the hobby he loves.

I'll not discount any one's thoughts and feelings. We are the consumer, and consumers only have 1 voice, and that is where you spend your money. Sure, Polk's business could be more in line with folks like HiTec, but then they would not be who they are. They are a family business with employees that care. Sometimes poop occurs. If it happened to me, I'd smile and say no problem, I've got patience with them that goes beyond other companies. I respect it if others dont have that same patience.

The last photo I just recieved an award at the F.E.A.R. event in Az, and that logo on my shirt is PROUDLY WORN.

Just ordered a new Turnigy motor from Hobbycity that is the equivilent of a AXI 2826 for less than $19.00. It is the same as a .30-.35 glow engine and 900Kv. Should work very well. I have two other gold Turnigy motors and they are working very well. I have a Eflite Power 25 on the other one and it flies at half throttle with no problem. I also had to add quit a bit of nose weight even with everything as far forward as possible. I'm gonna trim some extra wood out of the back of this one and use a little bigger motor for balance. I'd rather have extra power as opposed to lead weight. Steve

If you want a brushless outrunner that is about Speed 600 size go to somewhere like www.hobbycity.com (http://www.hobbycity.com) and search through the .10-.15 glow size motor equivilents. I prefer the gold colored Turnigys from them myself. That should get you close. Unless the plane is a hotliner go with a 900Kv or less motor for a lower amp draw and swing a larger prop. Steve

I flew the Gentle Lady (72"ws) with a Eflite Park 400 outrunner and it flew great!! Gliders fly mostly "on the wing" so they don't really need big powerful motors. Steve

I was going to use an inrunner on my Jessica so it would be an almost drop in replacement. The problem was finding something with low Kv. So I just said "to heck with it" and made a mount for my old T-28 motor. I figure that it should get her up in the air.

I guess the only problem is now she'll be a whole lot lighter in the front.

I got my triplane today and it didn't have a scratch on it. I got my other triplane two or three years ago and had to cut out the wooden glow engine mount and had to build a electric outrunner motor mount. This one already has a box in it!! It also came with a seperate set of pushrods that seem MUCH lighter than the one on my other tripe. Steve

On my old one they come up through holes at the rear of the middle wing. I can check my new one later to see if it's the same. I just checked and the new one is the same. There is a groove on the BOTTOM of the MIDDLE wing. Feed the two ends of the back strut wire up THROUGH the bottom of the middle wing and fit the flat part of the strut in the groove. I used epoxy to glue the strut wire in the groove on the first one. See if yours is designed this way. Steve

Yes.. definitely worth the $25. I took her out again today. This will be a plane I take out any time I fly.
