My daughter’s just quit; most of her friends have had theirs stop working as well.

Seems like they were all gotten as Christmas gifts in 04; some get fixed others not.

Does anybody know what going on?

Google search the problem. I know my friends died a while back. From the big suit that was threatened and other stuff from a while ago it was the battery. They dont last. To top it off, they are not consumer serviceable. You have to Very carefully pry the case apart making sure you dont break the tiny plastic tabs, and then replace the tiny laptop style battery. There were how-to's and stuff before. The worst part, Apple admitted the whole deal and asked to just send the unit back for battery replacement - at $100! Most were dying just outside of warranty period and Apple said "oh well". There was site called "ipodsucks".com but I cant find it quickly now.

I did see this - http://www.macobserver.com/article/2004/02/10.6.shtml Explains the whole law suit and issue. Its exactly what you describe at 18 months!

Good luck.
