dang it all!!! channel 2 news keeps reporting nypd says drones are the next big threat for explosives and bio/chemical threats in terrorism.

it wouldn't bother me except they show small quads like the dji as well as bigger multi prop fpv's carrying larger cameras. paranoia is rampant in nyc.

now what with the bird brain pilots flying over crowds with dji size quads, it will shed a much more frightening picture that really stinks for our hobby. a dji ,and small fpv quads shouldn't be shown as the threat on tv.it's really poor news reporting that will cause uneducated folks to be frightened.... lets all hope and pray no terrorist use a mini quad to attack anyone, and news reporter don't hipe a story to get an audience.:censor:.

Yep,

The idiots are in full force flocking to LHS's everywhere to get their" drone" . This is THE 2014 xmas present much like the Cabbage Patch doll was in the early 80's.

It's just the beginning, unfortunately.

One of the real problems is "communication".... the lack of education provided by those who throw the term "drone" around (or have for that matter) when referring to a specific UAV.

If the general public (and media idiots) were better informed or provided better information and educated those they are trying to impress or influence, rather than "sensationalize" the subject.....the term "drone" would have less impact on the hobby...!

Unfortunately, even those in the "hobby" (not those who are informed or serious UAV enthusiast) contine to use of the term because it has impact and sounds special or important........that's where the education really needs to start........deplete the use of the term within the marketing and sales arena, within the club environment and magazines, eventually the term will be be less identified with all UAV.

I hangout with several serious UAV guys......the term "drone" is strickly frowned upon......just as much as the 'F" word socially......even if one frequents serious UAV web forums....one will often be chastised if the term is not being used in the proper context.

Here's a good link that tries to find a happy medium for the proper technical use of the term "drone"......it is difficult for sure, but applied within a rational perspective, it's pretty clear not every UAV is a "drone"....it really is a military term used incorrectly by 90% of the public...:

Comes down to marketing . Check out the website www.Dronefly.com They sell the phantom. If the public calls a quad copter a drone, there's a marketeer around the corner that will call it a drone.

I was explaining our hobby to someone the other day when she said: " oh yeah, those drones"

The cows are out of the barn. We'll just have to cope.

Our models far outclass the simple target drones of the 1980's and 1990's... (which were based on foam airframes, .60 glow engines and... 72 mhz radios)

They often meet or exceed the capabilities of some current military observation drones...

It is what it is.

Yeah
And again, it's the 0.05% of those :censor: "Pilots" that are causing all the problems for the rest of us that use reasonable sense and proper safety procedures. Those 0.05% can hurt all of us.

during the news report, they show a hobby quad fly over a crowd and land in front of a political figure across the pond and all they did was smile when it landed by the stage where they were standing.

of coarse another vid they showed was a guys uav with a paint gun mounted to it shooting targets shaped like people standing in a field. it was very accurate and the youtube version shows the pilot talking about his creation wearing a red/white and blue bandanna over his face to protect his identity. could he look any more like the freaks who terrorize folks all over the world?

oh well, time will tell what becomes of our beloved hobby.

Good grief.

That :censor: guy looks to be one of the 0.05%.

The scary part of all of this crap, just go to youtube, and search for UAV paint guns. Or UAV machine guns.

Some doofus mounted a shotgun on his large quad and was shooting rabbits with it...

People have been mounting systems to launch Estes model rockets from models since the 1970's (at least)

And I know of one guy that mounted one of those carnival CO2 power full auto BB guns on a model in the mid 1970's...

Nothing new ... Just more people getting caught.

NYPD as well some other areas are engaged in the procurement of 'Crowd Control Multi-Copters' .... and when you see the sales vids up on Youtube - you start to understand the sources along with the stupid 0.05% idiots where the paranoia comes from.

The vid I first saw - the MC had a serious stun-gun capability that could be swapped for bullet firing gun ... etc. etc.

Frightening FROM the NYPD let alone the crap they are putting out ...

another goof ball on you tube mounted 2 roman candle type fireworks to a quad and flew after his buddy shooting the fireworks very close to him while the brainless buddy ran around the field wearing a football helmet and T-shirt /shorts.:censor:

he never got directly hit but sure deserved to if there was any justice for his stupidity. the worst part of it all is that i was rooting for the quad to score a direct hit and this is why folks make vids like this...they get our attention for 3mins of behaving like the guys who filmed show named "jackass" and would pull one dumb stunt after another.....then young kids try doing the same stunts and get to visit the local ER.

edit:i try not to spend time on shows like this as they don't interest me at all, but youtube sure offers a lot of entertaining vids to watch.
