Slow Stick ESC & Battery

Afternoon all, I am looking for a little help with my Slow Stick. This is my 3rd plane and proving to be the biggest challenge after reading many threads on power set-ups for this a/c. I have a Slow Stick with the EPS-300C-DS, the a/c came with an 11x8 propeller (ok with me, would like to experiment with others though). My question is this; ESC and battery setup, I am confused. I made the jump to LiPo with my second plane (a Carl Goldberg Tiger 400 that is a great little plane!), so I am already sold on the benefits of LiPos. I have a CellPro Direct 4S charger and am using ThunderPower cells with good luck. What I am having a hard time figuring out is a good ESC & LiPo combination for my Slow Stick. I was thinking about a 910 mah, 7.4 volt, 2 cell pack, and for an ESC something in the 15-20 amp range. Thoughts? Recommendations? experienced modelers with wisdom to share? Thanks!

I'm running a 2410-09 with a 20 amp esc that I got from Headsuprc. With that combo, and a 11.1v 20c 2200mah battery, I get 40+ minute flights putting around at 50%. I love it. Grab the lawn chair, a refreshing beverage of your choosing, and kick back and relax. Great after stressful days at work.

flydiver 05-25-2008 11:42 PM

That'll work fine. The 300 will burn up in short order on 3S. On 2S it'll be pulling less than 10A. Most of the NiMh uses with it are ~900mAh. The SS will handle most any weight you throw at it so if you want more flight time get larger batteries. I've used 2200mAh on mine all the time (3S/brushless).

SIGOFlyer 05-26-2008 02:57 AM

Thanks for the info. Can I assume that I am shortening the life on the stock GWS brushed motor by running the LiPos, or could I get away with the 910 mah 2S battery and not cook the motor? I had thought about replacing the stock motor but wanted to try to use it at least for awhile.
I am leaning towards a 15A ESC and the 2S 910 mah battery unless there is a strong reason not to go that route.

All,
Thanks for the feedback and guidance....a quick question for totalsnafu, I am looking at headsuprc and the "PowerUp" lipo they cell, what kind of adapter would I need to charge those with my CellPro charger? I can't find an exact match, and those lipos are tempting at that price. any thoughts?

Here ya go,,A standard 2-pin JST connector is installed. The balance connector is the JST XH series 3 pin with 2.5mm pin spacing.

So Glad

I'm so glad I found this thread! So I bought my SS last night and was up till Very Early assembling it. I have come to find that I need an ESC and Battery pack. My SS has the Stock Motor which I think is a EPS 400. Really being so new to this, I really don't know what to get for it. I'd love long flight times, speed isn't on my priority list. I am using the guts from a Wattage Cessna 180. So it Just looks to me like I need the ESC and Battery. Any suggestions would be GREAT, like what kinds and where the best deals are. Trying to do it on the cheap as it is my starter plane which I plan on flying till it cant fly no more!

Mhworley::Its a 4-channel FM 27mhz transmitter&reciever so you'd probably need to use it all except the moter, you can use it though you may need to solder some extensions on it, It'll be mighty under powered,,hope this helped, your bub, steve

Mhworley 06-07-2008 07:50 PM

Cool thats what I was hoping, though it is so under powered It wont turn the motor. To me it looks like I need a better ESC and Battery. Am I crazy? or on the right track?

[Auto Cutoff: 5.4v for 2S; 8.1v for 3S] -
That's poor. You would like to see 3.0v/cell. If you fly by time and keep the RESTING voltage > 3.7v/cell you should be OK.
It's a problem with brushed LVC-many are not REALLY lipo friendly.
That stock battery from the Wattage will barely turn over the 400C.

[
Max Discharge Rate: 6C]
6C is a pretty low discharge rating. GWS batteries are pretty lame.
No balance adapter either. Don't bother. You can do better.
http://www.valuehobby.com/index.php
HeadsupRC
There are a bunch of others.

You might consider a Towerpro + ESC + 3S lipo package from Head's up. He lists some specific motor/prop/ESC combos for the SS. Good site to browse for new fliers absorbing motor/ESC data.
The whole price would not be much different from what you were thinking and work better.

Mhworley 06-08-2008 03:43 AM

So, I've got a story to tell now, I went to ultimate hobbies out here and almost walked out $108 poorer. They weren't very helpful, likely because they work on commission, so I was being up-sold. A little frustrated I went to Hobby People, they are like 2 blocks from each other. They hooked me up right away and got me the stuff that would work. So I got NiMH battery, nice an cheap and good enough for a beginner like me. And for ESC a Super Micro ESC by Airtronics. And I got some Deans power connectors to hook it all up. They were a pain to solder! But I got it to work. Now I just need to wait for a day with less wind. Thanks for all your help everyone you guys helped me make some good decisions.

flydiver 06-08-2008 05:10 AM

Was it at LEAST a 7-cell? The 400 won't hardly run on a 6-cell. 8-cell is good, 9-cell better.

For Dean's you may want to spend some time looking this over.
http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31630

Be SURE to follow the links. One is a good video. It gets easier after awhile. A soldering iron with some heft and power is important. Speed and technique are critical for a good solder join. My first 5-10 worked but looking back had problems.

Mhworley 06-08-2008 05:40 AM

Awesome, thanks for the help. I'll try it out with my 6 cell battery, if it blows, I can just get something bigger. Its got 1100mah.

After three eye operations, and at least one more to come, (retina problems) I bought the Slow Stick as well. I use to fly my giant ugly stick with a Zenoah G23 on it. I have not flown since last year, and have decided this would be a slow and easy plane to start with again.

I bought the SS without the power system, and have put on Hitec 55 servos. it is all assembled except for the motor, esc, battery and receiver. I will be picking up a Hitec micro receiver, and probably the 2410-09 and 20 amp ESC from Heads UP. My friend has one and suggested a 2409-21 he said it would add a little speed to the plane. I just want to do some easy flying and get use to one eye flying, so I will probably go with the 2410-09.

As for LIPOs, I have seen some Mystery brand lipos on ebay fairly cheap. Are they any good? I am thinking of staying in the three cell 1300 to 1600 mAh range.

Good thread so far I will monitor it.:Q

Hi Bob, and welcome to the wonderful family of Slow Stick owners.

Once you get it all set up the way you want it, it'll be time to go AP.
Here's my first attempt at putting a camera on my SS. Enjoy.

Also, check out the camera and how I mounted it on the SS.

The actual build starts at post #732 down towards the bottom of the page.

mumblinaviator 06-08-2008 08:18 PM

For you guys who have just begun this wonderful adventure with the SS, I highly recommend taking a look at www.headsuprc.com
Jeff is an excellent vendor and lacks Nothing when it comes to customer service/support. He carries every possible hop-up you could want for the Stick, including very affordable brushless esc's, motors, and lipo's. Before I found his store I thought I'd never enter the world of Brushless because of my budget, but Heads Up made it possible :)

I've got the 2410-09Y Outrunner with the 20A ESC, and a couple of 11.1V Lipo's that offer all the power you could want.

Enjoy.

Bowman Flyer 06-09-2008 01:09 AM

Don't forget

I would reccomend thicker shafts for beginners.I've noticed most of the motors you've talked about have thin shafts, lacking durability.Thicker shafted Brushless Outrunners are more expensive but are hard to bend on bad landings.Cheaper motors are less durable with thinner shafts, meaning it could just be a waste of money.

Sir Raleigh 06-09-2008 02:24 AM

If you install a prop saver and cut off the remainder of the shaft that will solve all the bent shaft problems.

TS, what prop are you running w/ your setup?

Thanks,

Heads Up RC looks like the place I am going to get my stuff. I first found HeadsUp RC on Ebay. What receiver is everyone running? I thought that might be a area NOT to get cheap in. I have thought of the Hitec Micro 05.

mumblinaviator 06-09-2008 02:39 PM

That's what I'm using (Hitec Micro HFS-05 ), not bad price wise, and so far I've had no issues with it. Light-weight too... (PS Headsup is the place to go!)

Fresbill: I realize you didn't direct your question to me, but since I've got the same power setup as TS... I'm running the GWS EP 1147. My largest battery is only a 1650mah, and I like to do alot of vertical flight/loops, so my run times aren't as long, but it's a Good prop. Low pitch so it's not too fast and has plenty of thrust.

Luvin My Slow Stick

4 Attachment(s)
A couple of months ago I got my slow stick and took my time building it. Some guys at the field helped me build it and test it for airworthiness...

I am proud to say I have soloes and am up and flying every chance I can get.

What came with my package- bought off ebay... 2409-12 brushless motor. 2cell lipo 7.4v, tx, 20amp esc and a big ol 11inch prop.

I purchased a couple of 3 cell 11.1v 1300 mah lipos and was only getting about 5 minute flight on them. Asking the guy at the field...the prop subject came up. A good guy named Gregg put an amp meter on the 2cell with big prop and I was pulling the required 12amps (how did he get that number?). when we put the 3cell on with the big prop, I was pulling about 27 amps....I almost burned out the motor and esc. Witht he 3cell we put on a 9x5 ep and pulled 12amps- just right for the 3cell and lipo. Also with this setup I now fly about 10 - 15 minutes and the battery does not get warm.

Can anyone re-explain the amps vs. prop vs. volts vs motor? Gregg did a great job...but I retained only about 10%. Nobody told me I had to think in this hobby! ???? I thought there was a chart out there that you could go by.

BTW, I put on the new millenium landing gear on my SS...and it looks great and flys great. It kinda looks like a real plane now.

I am not sure what to upgrade to next....any suggestions? how about the millenium ss x?

mumblinaviator 06-10-2008 02:47 AM

I have no insight regarding your power/prop dilemma, however, if you're around any water whether it be ponds or lakes I'll recommend jimsp's Flying Boat Kit

I think it looks great and although I haven't built mine yet, I've read Great reviews of the kit and its flyworthyness.

And for a cheaper alternate wing choice, check out Stevens AeroModel. Again, I hear great things.

Hey Mumblin!

I was just a grunt in the Army once upon a time. If I had good vision back then I would still be in flying helos instead of pounding the ground and that ugly brown sand in SWA.

I did, however, get to jump out of perfectly good airplanes....those were the days! :D

Ok, I am hoping to get a Slow Stick for Christmas, and I need a battery and ESC.
It will be this one: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...040#quickSpecs

Which motor does it come with, I cant find where it says? Anyways, would this battery + ESC work?

Sir Raleigh 12-06-2009 09:00 PM

Not sure which motor the plane in your link comes with, but either one (EPS100C or EPS300C Power System shown) won't last too long with a 3S Lipo battery.

Why not go with a brushless motor?

The battery capacity (900 mAh) in your link will be a little weak for that plane. You won't get much flying time. I'd suggest something between 1500 - 2200 mAh.

The SS airframe will carry just about anything you put on it.

The ESC will be okay.

Would you be willing to order from Hong Kong? If so, there are some good combos and nice batteries that can be recommended.

Bill

mumblinaviator 12-06-2009 09:03 PM

If you end up being gifted that exact Slow Stick, then it will come with an ESC for its BRUSHED motor. It has a brushed motor (either a 100 or 300) hooked up to a gear box. Your battery will work fine with that setup for a little while, although it will be a rather weak plane.

EDIT* Sir Raleigh beat me to it. The 11.1V Lipo will wear out the stock motor fairly quickly.

If you have a say in what you get for Christmas, change your request to the NPS (No Power System) version of the plane, that way you can add your own electronics.

I started with this Setup: 2410-09Y, 18A ESC from HeadsUpRC, with a 2200mah 3S and it offered plenty of power, and a decent climbout.

Then I moved to this Setup: 2836-09, 20A ESC with the same batteries, and it will take the Slow Stick vertical, with plenty of thrust leftover.

Jeff and Headsuprc is a great great help, ships very quickly, and will ship anything and everything for only $2... no matter how large your order. Highly recommended...

Good luck!

Thanks so much, everyone! I liked your plan the best, mumblinaviator. So if I went with the 2410-09Y, 18A ESC, what else would I need besides the battery, prop, servos, and radio equip.? I am very new to RC and appreciate all the help I can get;-):Q:silly:;)

PA

mumblinaviator 12-06-2009 10:23 PM

Not a problem at all. A receiver would be the only thing you'd be missing. EDIT* And 2 servo's

Being new to RC, I have to ask... do you already own a Radio? If you do, great. Just get a receiver and a crystal with a channel that matches that of your radio. If not, then you have some more shopping to do, because unfortunately, the Slow Stick does not come with one.

This Corona Rx is one that I use regularly, and own multiple. They work very well for 72mhz. Again, HeadsupRC carries them, thus saving you the trouble of shopping elsewhere and paying more shipping etc.

The Hitec Laser 4 is a good 4ch starter radio if you don't already own one. It's what I started with, and again, had no problems.

There are many differing opinions on Radio's, and many avenues you can take ranging from inexpensive to outrageous: 4ch, 6ch, 8ch, 72mhz, 2.4ghz, computer, non-computer. It all comes down to how much you can afford and how much you're willing to plan ahead. You can start w/ a cheap 4ch, but in the future if you start to own multiple and larger planes with more channels, then a more expensive radio will be necessary.

Good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions!

philipa_240sx 12-06-2009 10:30 PM

I definitely recommend the 2410-09Y BL motor from HeadsUpRC.

I also recommend getting the multi-fit prop saver:
http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...r-3.0mm/Detail

It will prevent a lot of broken props and bent motor shafts.

I've tried this motor with a 2S LIPO, but honestly it's much better with a 3S (1200-2200mAh). And don't forget to get a decent LIPO battery charger. Jeff at HeadsUpRC has a few different models available.

I fly my Slo-V with the same motor. I normally use the 1147 prop, but I swap in the 1170 for a bit more speed on windy days or just to have fun...;-)

PaperAirplane 12-06-2009 10:49 PM

Dang it, computer crashed and I have to rewrite this!
I began scratchbuilding a Cub for my first rc plane a few months ago and I am half done with it. I bought the Hitec Laser 4 with the O5S reciever and 2 HS-55. I think that I will learn to fly on the slow stick, so I don't destroy the balsa Cub on the first flight. I will save the HS-55s for the cub and use other servos for the SS.
So this will be the setup
Battery: http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...1800mah/Detail
Servos: http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...sh---9g/Detail
Reciever: o5s that I already have
Motor: 2410-09Y, 18A ESC
Prop Saver: http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...r-3.0mm/Detail
Slow Stick: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...dID=GWSAE0018I
Props: http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...rs-FIVE/Detail

Thanks for all the help

EDIT: Is there anyway I can lower the expense a bit? Right now it totals to $115, and under $100 would be best.

philipa_240sx 12-07-2009 12:18 AM

Actually, the link you posted is for the Motor/ESC combo which is a bit cheaper than buying separately. No need to purchase the Mag 8 ESC you list further down the page... that'll save some $$$.

You will also need to purchase a set of 3.5mm bullet connectors to connect the motor to the ESC. I prefer connectors, but you could just connect the motor directly.

http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...nectors/Detail

I would use GWS 1147 'slow fly' props if you are just starting out:

http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...rs-FIVE/Detail

The 1170's are nice for speed, but you don't need them. The stock SS wing will not hold up at the higher speeds if not reinforced.

PaperAirplane 12-07-2009 12:25 AM

I think that I will just solder on the bullet connectors, and this is what I am asking for as a gift, so I don't want to get too much extra.;-) Unless I get a heli instead.

PA

Thanks for the tip on the prop; I will go with the 1147 prop.
