LiPo in an old NiCd drill

I used an old tired 4S .... but it may be better to use a 3S if its better condition.

I've got some electric tools with bad ni-cd/ni-mh packs that I've considered using some of my old Li-Po packs on but just don't trust them in case I damage or over amp them during use. I'm sure they'd be just fine though. I'd have to encase them in something "protective" though. I'm far too lazy to go through all that. LOL. I do have a 4S2P a123 Li-Ion pack that I built from DeWalt cells in my motorcycle since early 2011. If I think about it I pull the pack out of the bike once every year or so and check cell balance but it's always perfect. It's WAY under stressed in the bike so who knows how long this pack is going to last me. Traditional sealed lead/acid batteries last no more than 3 years in my car thanks to the blazing heat here in the Phoenix area. I have some extra a123 cells but not enough to build a pack for the car unfortunately......

I recycle old lipos into various .... large capacity, 3S + 4S become power for field charging via one of my 12V chargers. I use an old 4S pack to run my IC engine starter if the field box SLA is down. Flashlights get new lease of life. The drill above.

There are so many items that can be altered to use them ....

After charging the 4S and giving the drill a burst ... it was warm ... so that small difference of ~0.5V is obviously once a load is on just a little much for it. The LiPo would throw as much amps as it demanded pushing the watts higher.

I dropped her back to a 3S and she is running slower but I now feel I can trust it to survive. Its also a 2200 3S nearly doubling the original NiCd capacity.
