Nice!

Hopefully I will be able to maiden within the next month. I kinda want to warm up this season before I fly the bigger builds!;-)

With my balance point I should have made the hatch all the way to the nose. I hafta slide the battery forward about 4 inches before I secure it. I think your hatch placement will be right on but how are you gonna handle the canopy? One benefit of my hatch placement is access to the wing mount screws without putting holes in the bottom of the fuse. Hope the rest goes well for ya.
I am at 82.6oz with 300g motor, 91g ESC and a Kinda excessive 528g lipo. This is sans wing tips and with Coverite Microlite. This gives me a 17.6oz ft wing loading. Let us know what your comes in at?

My battery hatch starts from the rear of the first bulk rearward 7 1/2 ".As forthe wing ,I have one hold down screw. It goes through a tube to the base of the wing. Both pictures should explain my idea's.Weather stinks on this side of the country(Connecticut).Cold and windy. Also I have my motor mount on back order:(.Anyway stay warm

Well the covering process has begun.I thought than when I started it was going to be a take down drag out war.But once I set my shop up for covering and have my tools origanized I start to enjoy the work.I'll post pictures later.

Covering has started

Well covering went better than I thought. Also it helps to have a reference picture for your color scheme. So first I set up my tools and work area for covering.I cover on a ironing board.Jumbo size.It works perfect and the surface dosen't beat up the soft balsa air frame.Next covering scheme. As I stated ealier,I will be using the Fosters Lager color scheme.I always start at the rear of the plane and proceed forward.Bottom of the elevator's and stab are silver.Top is corsair blue with a gold stripe. All covering is ultra coat/oracover.In one of the pictures is the oil can and you can get a idea of what I'm looking to accomplish.Anyhow more tommorro.Enjoy,

I would have had the wing coverd over the last weekend .But my covering iron crapped out.Fuse is coverd and the motor is instaled. The plastic stand off's come from the paper rolls that go in cash redgisters.

birdDog 02-26-2009 02:56 AM

::oDude, I am gettin' real jealous of the AXI.
That thing's gonna boogie! How many cells are ya planning?
That covering scheme looks awesome too. Fosters logo?
Can't wait to see it all dressed up.

I'm just hoping I can get mine in the air with the 4s:o
Hmmmm....... maybe series.......:D

ENUT 02-26-2009 02:19 PM

Rob ,the motor is rated for 5s to7s packs/or 16to20 round cells:blah:.As of rite now I have 3s packs and 6s packs.I always do test runs at home to see what works best.I will try the 6s packs but don't think I'll need all that voltage. Most likely start hunting for a couple of second hand 5s packs. As for the motor, its what I had lying around collecting dust.About 4 yrs ago or more I flew a sig something extra that I built and electrified on round cells!! and I really loved that plane. But don't have the alierons on high rate when your close to the ground:sad:. So that is when I purchased this kit.I hope it will be as good as the sig plane.Do you have your control surfaces set up for 3D? If so what are your max deflections? What control horns do you use?
ENUT

birdDog 02-27-2009 01:03 AM

Not sure about the Max. deflections. I beveled the surfaces to go about 45* each way and I am gonna go all the way with them. I have the RX in a different bird right now or I would check. I usually maiden with quite a bit of expo and half throw on low rates. I am still trying to snipe an ar6200 for it but they go FAST for less than $80. I have some pretty beefy 1 1/8" three bolt nylon horns and 4-40 dubro rods with z bends and steel clevises. Hopefully get this in the air soon but the weather does not look to good for a while:(.

Don't buy many 5s. I am sure the 6s will be mighty fun!

Funny thing about those AXI's. I had a 2820/10 laying around so I HAD;-) to build a mountain models E-tana! That ones on deck for maiden (with the RX!). I can't wait!

Edit:
I am gonna go with the suggested throws to start.
Rudder low 1 3/8" high 2"
Elevator low 1/2" high 1 9/16"
Ailerons low 1 1/4" high 2 3/16"

ENUT 02-27-2009 05:37 AM

I'm not on who use's expo a lot.But I like to have about 80% on the rudder.Other controls I use dual rates.Ya I know call me old fashion. My radio is only a hitec flash 5x.So it's nothing fancy.Just enough to get the job done.More picture tommorro (friday).Had a couple of "Honey dues" to get out of the way:rolleyes:.I should have the wing coverd.

More updates

Well the final assembly is going well.hitec 635 servo's on all control surfaces except 634 on the rudder.45Dgrees deflections on elevators and 50 degrees on the rudder travel:D. Cowl painted and color looks real close to covering.Paint was purchased at A.C.Moore crafts store. Will post pictures later.

Arghhhhh

Was setting her up in the yard, doing a little taxiing in the street, WHEEEE. Then I tried WOT while bracing the H stab with my legs. GRRRRRRRRRR. Seven (half) of the magnet came unglued from the bell of my new Turnigy 5055-600.:censor:. NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS. I will try re-gluing the magnets once I find 14 shims to space them out with, and a proper glue of course. I don't feel like shipping to HK, and waiting to get another that, from what I read, will do the same thing. AGHHHHHHH:censor: Not sure when I will be able to Maiden now.:sad:

birdDog 03-27-2009 01:37 PM

Heck with it, I am not puting a $45 motor in this thing. The search for a better motor begins....

ENUT 03-27-2009 11:19 PM

Axi 4120/18 is in my plane.I should be 150 watts per pound. But boy the balance was seriously tail heavy. Then I made up a 6 volt receiver battery. Now it's perfect.I was going to put useless weight up front. But the battery is perfect for need balace.I know everyone is using a hv bec but with these servos I'd rather have a receiver pack.I tell people,"Buy cheap,Buy twice" Sorry to hear of you motor crapping out.
ENUT..

birdDog 03-28-2009 02:18 AM

I just scored an AXI 4120/14. Slightly higher KV than the 18 since all I have is 4s chargers at this time. 800 watts should give me roughly 145W per pound.

Good idea with the RX batt. Nice peace of mind.
I am going with a CC 10amp BEC.

I have the turnigy magnets all lined up in the bell. It took a .110" (#35) drill bit to even them out. Next for some loctite 480 and an epoxy cage turned for clearance. Big PITA but all things point me to building a blu-cor monster!

Yeah, ya get what you pay for.

I am getting really anxious here:blah:

birdDog 03-31-2009 12:48 AM

The way it should be.

Got the motor in no time! 750w w/ 14x12apc 4s . Not a 3d prop but should give me ok speed. Now to solder in the peace of mind BEC and maiden. Bad part, I opened up my larger props to fit the 10mm turnigy shaft. That motor just keep haunting me. Need to make an Aluminum sleeve now! Solder tonite and holding for good weather!:tc:

SAD maiden

3 Attachment(s)
Well, after taxiiing back and forth a few times and getting a few inches of air, she seemed to track straight and level. Ok, lets get some air! Got about five feet up and the motor strated buzzing and seemed to stall. I tried powering through it and the motor just buzzed. Stalled at about 8 feet and nosed in at about 60 degrees. Wheel pant took out servo mount in the wing, nose crunched up pretty good. Luckily the ground was kinda damp.
I think I was set for mid timing and this may be the issue, or I could just have a junk turnigy esc. No problems before at static testing. It figures it would pop up at 8 feet of air.
More extensive bench testing, and a couple oz of epoxy. Think I'm gonna nix the wheel pants until she is trimmed out.

birdDog 04-04-2009 10:35 PM

It's alive!!!!

It flies! Being stubborn, I decided to go it again today. I got the wing fixed nicely (patches of white covering:o), epoxied and ca'd the nose back in shape and slapped some packing tape on that. Good thing I save the fiberglass cowl!:o I also removed the stabbing action of the wheel pants. Those will be dusted off and replaced after a few more solid flights.

ENUT, DEFIANTELY USE HIGH TIMING on your esc with the AXI!!!!

I would suggest about 30% ailerons and 40-50% elevator for low rates.
This thing has a INSANE roll rate at 1/2 throttle and no wing tips.

The AXI 4120/14 with an APC 14x12 rolls of the ground in less than 15 feet at about 3/4 throttle.

Seemed kinda twitchy balanced at the rear of the suggested CG. I still need to experiment since I was up in 10+mph winds plus gusts. Yes, I am stubborn. Thinking back, sans wheel pants I guess I was past the recommended rear balance. Ooooops

Gonna be a great plane :D. Now to go beautify the front of my fuse.

gfdengine204 04-04-2009 11:27 PM

Rob,

Glad to hear you got her in the air. So she's got a little "character"; no biggie. I am sure you will have her back to purty in no time a'tall.

ENUT 04-11-2009 03:43 AM

Rob, "CONGRADULATIONS!!!!" on the maiden and also I wish you a speedy repair on the cowl area.Do you want the clear cowl I have? .I'm using the fiberglass one in the kit.My esc is a castle creations. It is a older generation brushless controler but it seems to work okay.Tommorro I will do a couple of static thrust test.I'm using a 15x8 apc e prop.I'm gonna order a 15x4 3d prop though.
ENUT

birdDog 04-11-2009 05:09 AM

Thanks Enut for the cowl offer. I got her wrapped up pretty good and installed the fiberglass one. Can't really tell she was wrecked except for the white patches on the wing.

I am getting pretty anxious to upgrade the chargers and run some higher voltage. For the time being, the 14x7 flys pretty decent. The 14x12 was trying to show off some speed to the nitro guys. I think I will try some bigger props once I have improved my pilot skills. THATS gonna take a while.

That things gonna rock on the 15x8 w/ 6S.
Good Luck with your maiden, be sure to have chilled a Fosters for when you return home!

Maidened flight!!

2 Attachment(s)
Well the maiden flight is under my belt. The plane tracked perfect on the runway.I used high rates to get off the ground. But in the air,"THIS PLANE IS INSANE!!!" and also a big floater!I switched to low rates on elevator(30% travel of high) and it's still super twitchy.I will reduce my low rates again. Also I had a slite:eek: tail heavieness plane too.But I ran out of time.Hopefully this week the weather will recover. As for video ,none to show. But hear are some static pictures at my house.
ENUT

birdDog 04-20-2009 05:43 PM

THATS AWESOME! Looks really cool:cool:. I had some issues with the CG. I have it set to the forward location now and like it. Mine was kinda tail heavy at the center balance point. You ain't kidding, these planes are nice. How do you like that roll rate:eek:? With my green piloting skills I am happy to just keep it aerobatic for now. Mine is a rocket on a 14x12 4S.

ENUT 04-20-2009 06:37 PM

With the plane being so twichy in pitch control I was happy to get it back on the ground in one piece. You know I could shut the throttle to nothing and the plane just floated there!! Talk about this plane being a floater:Q .I also think the plane is very under rated.More peolpe should build this plane and see waht 3d is all about. With the elevator on high you can put the plane straight uo and down in the air.Like I said I post more about the funky40 when I get a chance to put it through it's paces.Later,
ENUT
