What was the verdict? How did she fly?

My latest is a 35" flying wing, made of paperless Dollar Tree foam covered in cellophane gift wrap. The cellophane looks bright red on the roll, but it's more of a pinkish magenta on the plane. There are LED lights inside the wing, so it lights up at night.

Watch out, Crash. I'ma take this thread away from you! :D

My latest scratch build: the Kung Fu. 28" wingspan, 250 grams AUW. Goes like a rocket with its little 1700kV 24 gram outrunner.

Hey Mark nice plane ! Are you going to flight fest in Malvern ,Ohio next week??Should be a great time? Best of luck with the Kung Fu Mark. fdnyjery aka Jerry

mclarkson 07-10-2016 01:32 AM

Thanks, Jerry. I doubt it. I don't get much chance for travel and it's about a 30 hour round trip for me. Besides, I've never gotten around to getting an AMA membership and most big get-togethers require that.

Crashalott 07-10-2016 01:21 PM

Heya Mark!
Nice one, you got her smoothed out pretty good there now.
I am working on another Bipe now and have the fuse just about finished.
Next i will start the wings.
Will put up a picture later.

Am I crazy, Crash, or do you build one or two of those a year? :)

Can't remember if I've ever asked you about plans.

I have built several UB's in the past. This one is a bigger one than the others.
The Infineon's look a little bit like the UB's and i have built several of them also.
Plans can be obtained for all of these on RCGroups.

Here is my latest build, it's a combination of a Raven plan and an Ultron plan that i had. The fuse is raven and the wing and tail are ultron. I have flown it
3 times so far but don't have it tweaked yet. Maybe this morning if it's not too windy.

But guess what? I now have a completed 44"WS 9 3/4" chord wing
with turbulators (?) from LE to TE. Left paper on & done winwax
oil base thing & some painting. The waves are very noticeable!
The wing was formed with a lot of under camber. I think it turned
out to be a strong foam wing?? But what do I know about DTF??

Should it be scrapped??

Maybe this foam building is too much of a new trick for an old dog!

Jimmy

Well it's been over year since I touched this thing. My first foam attempt, not so good! The paint scheme is covering building rash! Yeah, I know
it's way too heavy! BUT the maiden did surprise me yesterday. It did fly rather well, & my pilot skills are lacking!!
I think I'll try an FT. Viggen next? Now that my spine surgeries are paying off a little.

Regards
Jimmy

Thanks Joe!

Only flew 3-4 jerky circuits, before flopping it in. Can't look up very
long. I am going to take a little beach chair next time, & try the
semi-reclined position? I have used that in the past when flying my
gliders, & my spine was in really bad shape.
The winters here on the coast are more moderate, but there is another
storm brewing, so will have to watch that one!

Jimmy

First of all have a good quick recovery Jimmy and second i think your plane looks good and ya did good on the maiden.
Keep at it and it will all come together for ya.
Oh and here is my latest foam build. A lazyBee in Foam.
Flew the maiden a couple of days ago and all went well.
It is a RET control i was too lazy to put ailerons on the wing.Ha
Flys good without them anyway.

riverrat 10-06-2016 02:43 AM

Thanks Crash!

I think foam sure has it's good points.
But I have building with balsa for 68
years, and tend to build way to heavy.
(always have?) Going to try some more
foam builds. Maybe I can get the hang
of it?

Hunkering down now for the arrival of
Matthew Fri. night.
Give Rex a bone! He would love it here
because of all the coons. My English Pointer
has became a tree dog. And a good one too!
Regards
Jimmy

Panther 10-06-2016 05:28 AM

Building heavy... Yeah... old school. Build them to take a hiding. Took me a long time to train myself to build them to fly, not to crash.

I turned 68 a couple of days ago and enjoy building /flying just as mush as 60 years ago.
Nowadays I can buy what I want. We had to make nearly everything back then.

This comes a little late but best wishes to you all in the path of Mathew.
Hope you all come through it ok.
Rex is no longer with me Jimmy, i had to sell him because he was following his nose too much when loose and getting me in trouble. At my age 88, i couldn't keep up with him. I had him for one yr. As a puppy he was cute and loveable but he got too destructive as he grew up. Chewed everthing up and dug holes all over the yard. He is where he belongs now though the family that bought him has a kennel with other dogs and children and Rex even gets to go in the house and in their bed , so im told. He will get to hunt also.
Im too old for any kind of hunting now so it is best that i sold him for both of us.
Regards Crash:)

Anyway here it is
Wingspan 40inches
Length 33.5
Weight 13oz
Did the maiden yesterday and it flew ok with a few adjustments.
Second flight better yet.

Thanks for all your build ideas, Crashalott. Do you have any plans or know of any plans for building this Visionaire clone? Thank you.

Crash.
Matthew did a job on me!!! Lost 8 huge Live oaks & Hickories. FEMA picked up a log & debris pile 200 ft. X 15 ft. X 15 ft. Yesterday. Property a mess from heavy equip. tracks. No power 6 days, & zero TV & internet for 3 weeks! But lucky. Just a few shingles on shop roof.

Sorry about Red. He had to conform to his DNA. I'll be 80 in 3 months & sure can't follow a tree hound anymore. Rebones rule!!!

Jimmy

On this little Salt Marsh & river Hammock two homes were totaled, & several with huge trees on roofs.
