Thaw before charging?
If a LiPo battery has been stored in a freezer (at storage voltage) does it need to be thawed out before charging to full voltage or can it be charged cold?

You should let the pack warm up close to room temp before charging.

Freezer? Most people tell you not to freeze a lipo. How does that work out for you?

JetPlaneFlyer 04-05-2014 08:46 PM

Yeah, I use a fridge but not a freezer. It might be ok though, I think extreme allowable lower temperature for LiPos is about -40C, and a domestic freezer doesn't get anywhere near that cold.

Convenience, I have a freezer in my hanger/workshop. Haven't used it to store the batteries yet though. I was just wondering should I ever need long term storage.

You can charge them cold but if you get a full charge into them while still cold they could over volt as they warm up. Might be ugly.
