i've pulled all the stock electronics from mine too and am using a DX7.

I'm using an Avionics Pilot 35 ESC, but I suspect you can go down to a 25, no problem.

i agree with the wind being problematic and would only add to be cautious with this plane when flying at larger fields as receiver reception can get interrupted.

I have definately had bad luck with the Channel 2 reception on my spitfires. But, I just finished setting up the Spit with a Spektrum 6100...
