That is correct, Dan. The Wasp was the R-1340 which made 600hp in the version used in the AT-6. My Dad put one of the R-1340 on a Stearman but all it did was burn more fuel.


The size of the fuselage of the Stearman limited the spray tank size to around 200 gallons and the R-985 would take care of the load, so the R-1340 just used more avgas.


The Stearman would not go any faster since the drag on a Stearman limited the speed anyway. Too many flying, landing and brace wires and N struts.


We actually used some Stearmans with the original 220hp Jacobs or Continental engines. They could not quite carry the load the 450 could.
