Default House of Balsa Cub

Anyone tried these Schoolyard Series kits?
Picked one up really cheap on Fleabay...postage was more than kit - NIB was sealed from factory.
Will probably reduce dihedral and add ailerons as well as some struts for looks and function. Got olive drab Hangar 9 covering and do L4 finish.
Should be a quick build and will probably just do a few flights and sell, as I need to make some room for a bigger project

This is an unbelievably easy and well cut kit. I literally pinned 2 pieces down and everything fit snugly in place and stayed put. Drop CA at the joint and let dry. It took me about 20 minutes to do this wing panel. Easier to assemble and better fit than any puzzle!
Now I did have to lay out all of the pieces and ID a couple of pieces that had fallen out of the sheet and a few damaged small tab corners, but this is a real gem.

Default Clone?

Well this Cub is about the same size as my foam HZ, so I had a brainstorm - put the same electronics in it as the HZ version! Just go to the replacement parts tab on Horizon and get what I need!
Almost anyway, servos, linkages and motor / ESC are perfect fit. I will add the Eagle L3 for simple stabilizer as it shouldn't need the AS3X/SAFE variety. I already have a Spektrum receiver that should work nicely. Will also use same motor and mount, prop and hub for the HZ model.
Trying to decide whether to sheet the wing and fuselage with 1/32. Covering will be in colors along the lines as this one.

Default Foam Cub parts in a balsa version...

So I guess I have a new build technique - let the manufacturing geniuses work the problem and use the same equipment! Using the same linkages, servo, and engine from a PZ Cub. Actually incorporating some of the same specs from my foam Cub as I know they work.

Default It's becoming an airplane...

Got half day off and made some progress! Time to get creative and build a motor box as this model was designed for an Astro-Cobalt or Speed 400, not the PZ 960. Fits easily enough though. I got a DSMP reciever with stabilizer going in it.
Should be fun!

Stabilizers built, push rods going in with control horns mounted, engine is mounted to the custom firewall. Structural nose enhancements for more scale appearance. Wing struts next.
With a little work from the micro files and a little paint, the dummy cylinders look pretty cool.
Should be able to start covering soon.

Default Nearly has a pulse...

Got a lot done on the Cub after flying a few hours this morning, would have been a great morning to get some stick time with the Stearman, but can'get more than 2 models in the Civic....
Time to find an Odyssey!

Default Covering begins!

Surprise day off, and winds will begin howling by 9AM so a no fly Day becomes build Day! Happy to begin covering surfaces today. Last of the structural enhancement for control surfaces are done. Had to scratch the foam insert idea for the aileron servos...glue was too hot for the foam I used - which reminds me. What is the more popular glue for hot guns? I just got some True Value generic all purpose.
Servos and connections are all smooth, everything fits nicely with plenty of room for securing things. Did not make a battery run test as I lack one critical component...should probably just make my own - Y harness for ailerons.
Kinda interested in setting up that Admiral DSMP gyro / reciever.

After a morning of flying, I worked on the Cub some more...
IT'S ALIVE!!!
The rudder and elevator got switched, the ailerons are backwards and the gyro still needs to get programmed. I have the streamlined tube for wing struts and need to make a hinged hatch for the battery. That said, at least everything works and is centered. All the equipment fit so well near the CG I am confident it will not need much, if any, weight to balance as there is a lot of room to move the battery forward or aft as necessary.

Didn't get the landing on video, since I took over in the air, ran the battery out - oops - and landed in the desert as a glider.
Gyro was off, to get adjustments sorted, but none were necessary as she flew straight and level at half throttle. It is sensitive, but I expect the stabilizer gyro to help smooth that out. That said it was not a handful to fly, just a typical smaller size flyer.
It weighs about half what the foam HZ Cub weighs, same engine and ESC, Admiral RX600s reciever/ gyro. Hangar 9 Ultracote and home made laser print decals.
Invasion Stripes coming for easier ID in the air!
Sorry for the poor quality.
