Default EDF vs blowers project advice needed!

Hi everyone,

I am new to the world of RC and will get into it soon enough when I retire!

However this post is about another personal build project I am working on for a small fan system for spot cooling purposes ie. 3D printing (also a new hobby interest!).

I was initially thinking of using computer blower fans (which are more pressure-rated than normal computer axial fans for my purpose) but am now intrigued by using RC EDFs instead as they seem more powerful than blowers.

Have some quick advice on the following:

1. Assuming that I won’t be running anything off AC power, can a EDF run off a USB cable connected to powerbank?

2. Are the power requirements of a EDF way much more than a blower? I am wanting run times of at least 8 hours.

3. Is an EDF better than a blower type fan to move air, especially if I am going to force the air into a long duct (maybe 20 inches long) many times smaller than the smallest RC EDF diameter.

4. Any comments about the duct end in terms of creating back pressure – I was thinking of flattened nozzle to spread air across a larger surface in addition to a small round nozzle.

5. What’s the smallest EDF that can match the biggest computer blower with similar or lesser noise?

6. What’s the best way to control the speed of a EDF with a dial?

EDF would not be a good way to do this at all .... they are power hungry and do not like being restricted at all.

Why do you need a 50" duct ? My 3D printer has fan bolted to side of the print head and its basically a Computer Chip fan ...

You have to be careful where the air blows to as well ... usually its just to prevent the upper part of the print head holder and feed from heating up ... but the actual print nozzle does not get air blown onto it - because it needs the filament to come out hot so it sticks to previous layer etc.
Too much air flow and you will have problems ...

No commercial EDF will run off USB power, they need MUCH more power than a USB can provide. Also bear in mind that they pretty much all use brushless motors, so you can't run them direct from a DC power source, you need a brushless speed controller.

A PC cooling fan is a far better option for this type of duty.

Some well-structured reading and handy e-tools for rainy/windy days.
Will save you, and us a lot of questions. Notably the 'what went wrong?' kind of questions
Will also prevent you from burning up several controllers and/or motors and/or battery:
E-flight primer and tools

And please, do your RC equipment, wallet, ego, battery, controller, motor, house/garage/car a big favour ... get a watt-meter. It will more than pay for itself, will save you at least one fried motor and one fried controller. Will also help you finding the best/optimal setup.
