Default KW club

There was an idea started by a modeler name Hoser that flew EDF Jets that for some reason...just struck me as a great idea. Hoser and I spoke about tweaking the logo and chartering a division for the prop side of the house. He agreed and here we are. The KW prop club started a year ago this month (8-10-04) and to date I have shipped over 73 decals from the USA to Sweden to Australia and almost everywhere in between. It has been a huge success. The correct symbol for kilowatt is kW. Feedback was received from members and the decision was made to be a bit different and so the Kw was born.
There is no cost to the member. Hoser and I fund this project as a thank you to each modeler who breaks a KW barrier. We feel these individuals are treading new territory and pushing the electric side of the hobby to new lengths. At SEFF '05, it was a good feeling to see well over a handful of pilots that were members of the Kw club and proudly displaying the decal on their plane, field box and cooler.

To qualify:
A photo and description of the setup (motor, batteries, amps etc), a photo of the wattmeter results that displays the Watts, Amps and volts and a minimum of one successful flight. Yep..that is all there is to it. Then PM me you mailing address and I will send you out a decal (2Kw are on order as of this post).

Post your Kw setups here and lets get the WattFlyer Kw club going!

I think my Quique Yak Qualifies for this group. Close perhaps, but over 1KW and flies great.

Default The Kw Club

While looking over the past posts I found this one about the Kw club. I checked with Mike and he said it was still going on. Said I should make a post and get it going again. I'm new to this so I had to run my numbers past him to see if I had it right. So here is my setup and the pictures to match.

Here is a picture of me and my plane at the field. I have 18 flights on her at this time, but some were just up, 3/4 turn, and lineup to land. (It can be a tricky plane to land with flaps and wind). I was planning on a 4 cell setup, but needed nose weight so I went with a 5 cell to get my CG with no lead. Next is a shot of the nose layout. There you see I'm running the Power 46, Phoenix 60A ESC, 5 cell TrueRC Lipos with 4000 mA, and pulling around 6.7lb of plane. Then there's the watt meter with the numbers. I thought the batt was going to go dead or someone was going to loose a finger before we could get a good clear picture. This is not an easy thing to do with the plane screaming away at full throttle mulching anything within 10 ft of the blades.

I have seen as high as 66A on a full pack running 20.78VDC, but that was before replacing my Phoenix 85 for the Phoenix 60 ESC. I had to re-prop it to keep it under 60A. Here's a post where a few of us are working on these things http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/show...722#post193722

As I have read the past posts it seems like many more planes on here could hit this mark easy. My Corsair (has not flown yet so doesn't count) with a Power 60 and an Evo 20 6 cell will be coming in at a little over 2000 Watts. I know where you are coming from with trying to get an image of the Wattmeter. So I have found a workaround that has set me free to analyze to my hearts content. Sometimes more information than I really should look at

Check out the Eagle tree products. Then not only can you see and analyze what's happening on the ground, but in the air. Its one of the most usefull things I've done since getting into Electric in 1996.

Noticed Bill's "1Kw" award and came looking for more information. You know how you can tell you have too many planes? When you think to yourself, "What a cool personal record that would be to have a plane to gets over 1,000W. Wonder if I'll ever have anything that powerful ..."

And then you remember you've got a 2,800W EDF sitting up on the shelf that you've never touched because you're still waiting on batteries. Still don't know if I'll be able to ever reach that 1,000W mark on a prop plane, though ... that's a pretty cool accomplishment!

Wish I could have it ready for SEFF, but my Zippy packs have been on order since March 1st and I'm still waiting on them (they're in stock, but some piddly little $10 packs are holding up my order, and I don't know how to make HobbyCity partial ship).

Flying 442

I'm a bit of an newby, so forgive me if I speak out of line, but I have a wattmeter similar to the one in your photos I believe. An Astro 101? In my
(limited) experience I find (after a static run on the wattmeter) that I can disconect my ESC, while leaving the meter still plugged into the battery, thereby still retaining all my readings on the meter. Is there a reason why, in your photo, you need to have motor running for the pic.
Incidentally I think you are a blessed man. I don't know how many times I have said to myself. "Geeeez........I wish I had a third hand"

I am still a few weeks away from first flight of my first electric plane, so my entry will be coming along sometime early May

Don't know about the others but mine clears as soon as you throttle down.

I'd like to pick up one like yours, or get that third hand you mentioned. I'm sure that would come in real handy!

Yes it does. 1 Kw = 1 KiloWatt (or 1000 watts)

Wow 20in props, that is sick...

K gotcha, i think about 5years from now i could reach this goal lol. A bit expensive a motor that spins a 20in prop and a battery to power that beast, do you use like a 5 or 10cell pack? I bet that giant flying wing with 2 big electric motors and a 10cell lipo could get a kw or 2 award.

I used an 18 for the test, have experimented back and forth from 18, 19 and 20" I have a 19 x 10 on it right now. Have not rechecked any readings with it but it seems to fly just a tad bit better.

I used my Astro Wattmeter for years, and about 2 years ago got the Eagletree Data Recorder. So far it is one of the best tools I have bought for Electric. It gives you so much information it's unbelievable. And I don't use all the available functions. And putting it in the plane gives you analysis in the air as well. Attaching one of my bench test Graphs and a Flight graph as examples.

My 50CC Yak spun a 27" prop on 16S3P and topped out at over 5kW. I now have vowed to not go over 10S..well..ok 12S

It doubled as a spot welder . In two years I had change out the deans three times due to plug spark. That was before I really new about the anti spark plugs and now the new HV contollers are coming with them.
