Default Guillows P-38

Guess I should start the build thread before I get too far. All the plumbing is in. I spent a bunch of time beefing up the tail assembly and the stabilizer had to be rebuilt as it has some ugly warps, twists and gaps. The wing tips will get cut off and replaced a carved solid balsa taper to make it easier to sheet. One of the next steps is putting her on a diet...hole punch for wing ribs and formers.
I know I posted up some photos in another thread, but figured this was the right place to continue. All up it is 14.6 oz now, sans batteries (380mA /7.4V). Not sure where the CG is right now, but have plenty of space (if that's really possible) in each fuselage near the CG point.
Now for the really clever stuff...I figured out how to use the scale cutouts in the cowl and fuse scoops to be functional for cooling. Each section can be removed with a few screws or nylon bolts, except the vert stabilizers. Once they're covered and epoxied - they will be permanently attached - rudders can be removed to separate fuse from tail. Though I don't plan on doing that on any regular basis.

Default Update on progress

Balsa sheeting has begun. Did an engine run and servo test and everything checked good. Battery box fits nice just slightly behind CG point with easy access under 'supercharger' cover. Plank sheeting worked good on lower fuselage half.

Very nice work! The P-38 has always been one of my favorite WW2 planes.

What goes up, must come down. The trick is to keep it in one piece.

Default ...and now the fun begins!

Started dialing in the tail feathers and got all controls working from radio. All smooth - did get some "chatter" from the aileron servo - any ideas or worries? One vertical stalizer was covered at the end of the day, but I will post up some pics after tomorrow when more is done.

Final assembly underway, those plastic pieces are actually fitting pretty good but a few got deformed over the years and seems the heat gun is an essential tool. Don't want to get crazy with the details until after the maiden flight...

Maiden flight is coming soon. Now for the question, should I put a gyro in it? Since I will not be the one flying, I suppose it could be off for the first flight a get all the trims set up. I have a great 'instructor' and test pilot at the AMP's club here in Phoenix. My thumbs are getting back up to speed.
The Lightning is at the point where I want to fly it before I spend any more time on finishing. I did a start up and taxi and was impressed with the ground handling. Made some minor linkage adjustments and changed the rudder control cable to a solid wire. The single aileron servo was just not enough and shoe horned two metal gear servo in the wing. When I build the next one it will definitely get micro's in the wing. Now I found a new issue. Rapid movement of those ailerons causes brownouts - normal movement has now issue. I do not plan to do aerobatics with it so I can live with it if it would not be a safety issue.
Thoughts?

Gyros are quite useful especially on smaller planes as they help smoothen the flight and make the plane less effected by wind gusts etc. Usually they don't really make the plane easier to fly as such, just smoother looking in flight. For the maiden you would want to either disable the gyros or at least have the gain set low. Too high gain can cause violent oscillations which is the last thing you need on a maiden.

Still making some tweaks and tests. Did do some taxi tests and got it tracking straight, even got up a little speed but backed off as she started to rotate - woah girl. Tweaks are kind of a pain, as I wind up having to remove the wing. Got one more to take out some elevator and get it centered. Hoping next weekend I can take two planes to the field.
I'll hold off on the gyro for now, but she is small and could probably use it later on. Kinda crowded in those little fuselages.

Might get maiden flight next weekend, but got the final tweaks done in time to get this before sundown. Took it by LHS last weekend to get a second set of eyes to look it over. Discovered a few other things after making he recommended adjustments so was glad I made the effort.

A few more tweaks are in order:

First, 3S batteries instead of the 2S 430.
Batteries need to shift forward all the way to wing LE in order to fit under covers
Receiver gets moved more forward
Nose weight will have to be reduced to meet CG after mod's - but that means it will be lighter, and that 's a good thing.

This is a magnificent project that took a lot of dedication. Decades ago we had to do it this way, but the ready availability of foamies has got us spoiled.

I noticed that it's been 20 days since your last post, F22trainer, before the maiden flight. With so much hard work that went into it, I'm afraid to ask what happened. I'm guessing she might have had a discouraging encounter with the ground?

Actually, she is still in one piece. Making some changes to redistribute and remove weight. Needs a 3S instead of 2s which is easy enough. But wing loading is really high and I want to do what ever possible to get it down. Receiver is getting moved, battery box enlarged and moved, and nose weight reduced to balance.
She will fly.

You have something non-existent in Seattle: A perfect field for high wing loading. Plenty of room for long approaches, no obstructions, a long paved runway.

Hopefully you've got sharper eyesight than I have; with the smaller size and the need for speed,that would help.

I raced small planes and learned this the hard way: Look sharp when the sun is low and wear your baseball cap.

With the CG comfortably forward, and more power from 3 cells, she might fly like a lead sled, but who cares? That P-38 shooting by like a silver bullet on a low pass is going to be glorious.
