I've been working on a RC version of the Wing Commander Dralthi. I finally got a working version up in the air.
When I first started it looked simple on paper but keeping it looking somewhat scale has been a problem. The design makes it difficult to have flight controls. Most challenging has been the big slot in the middle. Ideally I would have just put the battery at the front of the disc to get the CG right but I wanted to keep the disc clear for better looks. That meant putting the battery of to one side. This also meant I had to counterbalance the battery with weight on the other side. I don't have the balance just right yet so the plane prefers to turn to the left (battery side).
I've also struggled with the motor mount. I've gone from rear pusher, to prop in a slot pusher to finally mounting as a puller. I'm going to clean up the design, re-cut and make a painted version. If that all goes well I'll release the plans.

WOW .... The Wing Commander game on PC - was my favourite of all time. Far far better than Stealth Fighter, X-Wing etc.
I have a revamped copy of WC for later machines but needs to be run in DosBox - which slows down the processing and makes it playable.
Remember many years ago when a fellow modeller scratch built the Starship Enterprise .... was a right handful to fly .... had a pusher prop at back end of the main disc.

Yup, I wasted many hours on Wing Commander. Its so funny thinking about the PC requirements and game sizes back then vs now. Here are the plans if anyone is interested to build one.
