Default SUPER Quick Delta Scratch Build

Hi Everyone I went to Michaels Art & Craft store this Evening, and this Sheet of 20x30 foam board called out to me, and said, Make me fly
What Could I do, I was Powerless Ok, I said to the Foam Board, There is something wrong with me :p Well, Here is how I am going to make that foam board fly
I have a picture of some delta combat wing planes, I think I borrowed them from RCG
did some measuring, and started cutting, here are the results of that cutting on foam board, Enjoy. Chellie

That will be cool Bruce, This will be my first delta wing, so its a learning process for me, if anyone knows where the CG should be at, please let know, I will add a long strip of velcro, to slide the battery back or forward to get the right CG, The wing is 20" wide, Take care, Chellie

Default How do you turn with Elevons only ??

Hi Chellie , Got the foam board today . What fun it will be building this plane I know I can do It .. Pretty good wiith this kind of suff .. I was an auto mechanic is years .. I know ... Big Deal !!

I am thinking about the control surface type to use ..the elevons soond cool.. But I do not understand how you turn the plane with them .. If you lay it on its side you can turn .. Like a big rudder the elevon would be then .. But that doesn't really make sense to me .. If I go with a rudder/elevator setup i'm thinking of a little bigger rudder ..

Could you please explain to me how the elevon turns the plane ?? And what you think of the bigger rudder ?? Maybe not on the bigger rudder ??
The good thing on these is that it is so easy to build... You can crash them or start over with out any big expense .. :-) Thanks , Don J.

Hi Diverdon,
You are gonna have a fun time with these Deltas, thats for sure...
Anywoo, Looking at the plane from behind, If you make a right turn the right elevon will go up and the left one will go down. Causing the plane to bank toward the right.
Left turn, Right elevon will go down and the left one will go up so your delta will bank to the left and go in the direction that you expect..

Default delta build

Hi Everyone Making the bottom skid, from foam, with foam board, you have to sand the paper with rough sand paper to take off the shine on the paper, so when you soak it, in the bath tub like i do, the water will get into the paper quicker, and it will peel off, the paper adds a lot of weight, so its better to remove it, the foam is soaking right now, so its time for a glass of wine ok lets make it a tall glass of wine Chellie

Hello, I have a quick delta i built myself, with no plans. It has a wing root of 32 inches and a span of 30 inches. It has no t/e span as the tips end at an angle at the t/e. Where would the cog be.
I followed the link that you provided for Chellie and i got a measurement of 16" from l/e
I will post build pics soon to clarify my my explanation.

Hi here is some info that will help you out with your CG, 30% of the leanght from the nose back, or 1/3 should be a safe place to start, but look over the links first, its always best to be a little nose heavy than tail heavy, take care, Chellie

When you soak in the water what temperature do you use (hot or cold or warm)?

Hi Everyone I got a little more done, It will be a ARF before I go to bed tonight or this morning, here is what was done so far, I taped the elevators on to the body, I used a New Tape from Scotch, NOTE FOUND OUT IT DOES NOT WORK VERY WELL IN WARM WEATHER, it got to 88 degrees here and it was too spongy, OH Well, I TRIED IT, I tape the body to elevator with a 1/4" gap, then press the tape together at the middle/seam, that makes for a nice tight hinge, thats very flexable, I also I cut a 6" lenght of 3/8" X 3/8" bass wood to the front body for the motor mount, I left it sticking out about 1" so I can slide a stick motor mount to it, and I added a piece of carbon rod to the rear of the rudder to give it some strength, I need to cut the rod to length after the Epoxy dries, in 5 mins here are a few more pics, Take care, Chellie

Chellie, I'm interested in your method for hinging. You press the tape together at the middle/seam for a nice tight hinge. Is this on top or bottom of wing? You put tape on both sides? Sorry, but I'm just new to foamies and am not familiar with this method. Could you elaborate?

Hi oct I have gone to another way of hinging that seems to work better, I sand the elevator to a 45 degree angle, and almost butt the top of the elevator to the body, so the top of the body and top of the elevator is flush, now open the elevator to a 45 degree angle, and tape the bottom, start on the body and tape into the 45 degree cut, and then on to the elevator, that seems to work very very well, here is a pick, when i was building my pusher jet, take care, Chellie

A little more done,

1. cut out the ailerons and sanded the hinge side with a 45 degree angle
2. taped the hinges in place, leave about 1/16" gap at the wing and 1/8"
on the side
3. tape the top flat, then fold the aileron to a 45 degree angle and place
the tape on the 45 degree section thats been sanded, I used clear
packing tape on top, and some scotch stretch packing tape on the
bottom, so it wont be to stiff.
4. taped the elevator the same way.
5. when cutting carbon fiber, you dont want to breath the dust from it,
so I use a wet paper towel, lay it in the miter box to catch the dust,
works great, then just throw out the paper towel.

No, Those are carbon fiber tubes, about 5 or 6 mm in Diameter for strength, to keep the wing from flapping, On my first pusher jet, I only had one tube, and in a hard dive the wings wanted to flap like a bird, so I added 2 carbon tubes and that took care of that, I had that pusher jet to about 75 to 80 MPH with no problem, I tried to make it so it would do 100MPH, with out coming apart Take care, Chellie

What's the best way for putting on the tape hinge? I know you have leave a gap for the elevons so it will have room to move but I didnt know how much?
