Default Cheapie - HK's HUMMER ...

Box arrived :

Contents :

Didn't take much to put together ....

But three points to note :

Elevator foam centre has to be cut to clear rudder ... nothing in manual about that.

CF rods are NOT the lengths as stated in manual - they are ALL long ! So you have plenty spare after !!

No mention of CF to be inserted into slot in stabiliser .. but slot is there ... I used one of the offcuts from the fuselage stiffeners.

Emax CF2822 motor, 35A ESC, 1250 Rhino 3S, FrSky 4ch Rx, TGY9 servos (4), 10x5SF prop. AUW with battery ready to fly 535gr.

Nigel.....

I like that profile.....I've never had one (profile) in my hanger. Thought of the Hummer when HK offered it....and your experience with it sold me......

But, a couple of days ago I put a plane and parts list together for about $65.00... not bad.

4 - 9g servos
1- Turnigy 2213/1050k brushless
1- 20 amp ESC

No additional linkage/mounting parts, I've got stuff.
No batteries, I've got plenty 1000Mah to 1300mAh 3s.
No props, I've got plenty 10x47 to 10x6 GWS & APC.

Was coming out of the U.S. S/W warehouse.........the shipping and tax came to $52.00.....standard USPS.

Just could not bring myself to spend nearly $120.00 on a $27.00 ARF......guess I could just purchase the Hummer alone.....and pay $50.00.........lol

I'm still looking around for a similar size and EPP like the Hummer.........some place here in the southwest U.S.............where shipping and tax would be less than half the cost of the aircraft and parts....!.......but I really like yours and will pick your brain when I get around to purchasing a EPP profile.

Thats terrible P .... here's my order and costs :

Hummer EPP 3D Plane 1000mm (KIT) (EU Warehouse) 1 US$34.53 IN STOCK
10X6 Propellers (5Pcs/Bag) (EU warehouse) 1 US$2.62 IN STOCK
APC style propeller 10x5-E (EU Warehouse) 5 US$0.89 IN STOCK

Shipment Registered (Tracking) Parcel - Netherlands to Latvia US$18.45
Taxes US$0.00
Total US$55.86

I'm really pleased with it .... I should have bought one earlier .... but never liked profiles. But since getting the 3D fuel and electric larger jobs - needed a good hack-model to learn on.

Pizzano, try Value Hobby in Addison, Illinois. They have the Hummer. Their shipping rates are also very reasonable. Gary

Thank Gary.......
I shopped around for the Red Eagle Hummer.....same plane as Nigels HK model.

It's either out of stock or discontinued at every reputable U.S. e-commerce outlet that carries HK (re-labeled) EPP models........

There are literally hundreds of EPP 3D models between the 700mm and 800mm......very few at the 1000mm size and $30.00 ARF..........kind of like Nigel, I'm looking into a nice 42"ws Edge.....wanted get my toes wet with a sponge first.....I fly some 3D with my bipes, but it will be a different world with a low wing that has the ability to prop hang, roll and turn on a dime.

Thanks for the review Nigel. The Hummer looks like a great value 3D trainer and general fun aerobatic model.

The HK Hummer is actually from Red Eagle Models - so maybe possible to source other than HK.

Yep Value sells the Hummer among others. But they are out of stock. Looks like a nice plane to bang around with for a while

P - what about the Techone 3D profiles?

Supposed to be best out there.

Nigel.....

Yes, the Techone profiles are nice. A couple of my buddies have owned the 850-900mm styles. I've considered the Yak54 1100mm version......it's the only one of three they offer over 900mm. But I was really looking for something more in-line with the Edge540 wing style......the Yak is close.

Nitroplanes is the probably the least expensive.....$50.00 plus shipping and tax, it's around $75.00.......without additional hardware. Trying to keep the whole package under a $90.00 budget with a decent motor and ESC......since I'm also considering (after learning on the spongy) a $300.00 ARF Edge 450......will need goodies for it as well.

I have to say that the two profiles I have ... Zlin and Hummer are both same 1000m size and its nice size. Not too big for 3s lipo, but big enough for 'presence' in the air.

I recently got my daughter a Twisted Hobbys Extra 300.

It is the foamy profile plane that is 48" wingspan. It flies awesome of course, but the price was $150 for the kit.

They actually offer a 39" edge 540 in both red and blue.

Another option is from a Chinese company called Winner's Model. (If you recognize those, you are correct. They're the 3DHS ones the best I can tell.)

They actually go up to 55" and I think the 48" ones are about $50 plus some shipping.

http://winnersmodel.weebly.com/ MFG Site...

Hope this helps.

I'm always amazed what price people will pay for a bit of foam ! I appreciate that design and creation of final parts comes into it ... but even so ... once the first is knocked up - the follow-ups are pushed out rapidly ...

EPP foam ... local DIY shop - you can buy blocks of it for peanuts - especially if you sweet-talk the Floor Manager to let you have the damaged stock. Often it just has a corner missing or something.

I'm so chuffed with this Hummer - I'm seriously looking at a decent Katana in balsa ...

So now I've swapped out the 2822 Emax 1100kv for a Turnigy 2830 1000kv ... this lets me fit the 11x5.5 prop instead of the 10x6.

Vertical thrust is 1:1 at about 65% throttle now instead of the 75-80% previously.

Looking forward to our storm weather to pass now !

The 2822 has gone back to my Angry Bird for further trials !

Exactly why I'm still shopping..........Can't justify spending more for the foam and shipping than what I could for the additional "really" important stuff..........

Just saw the 9XR radio there. How is that thing doing for ya?

Just so you know, our 5 of em are doing great! In two years we had one OrangeRX module go bad, but that's it.

I got all excited at the title thinking it was a model of the ultra light my great uncle designed. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_Hummer

slow stock prop reversal. it flies! easily! 543 watt dual motor bipe slow stick. push-me-pull-you. 242 watt 3 channel slow stick. 365 watt mini ultra stick. 415 watt mini contender. 810 watt ultra stick .25e. 220 watt alpha 450 sport (retired).

I prefer the 9X to be honest, because the trim switches can be found by feel. The 9XR trim switches being near flush with the case makes difficult to find by feel. I don't like the handle angled forward, the normal for most radios is angled backward and gives better when laid on table / ground. etc.
But overall - yes, very happy with it. I use exclusively FrSky gear in it for general flying and a FlySky module in my spare to fly my backup 450 heli.

Something that most radios have lost today, is real tension on sticks. The max you can get on them today with stock springs is too weak for me. So my stick movements tend to wander a bit. I would like longer sticks with more tension. But that's not a fault of the 9X - that's general radios now.

The 9X is of course no longer available, HK concentrating on the 9XR Pro. Because I have the gear to plug in - the Pro is attractive if I need new radio, but if I didn't already have the modules etc. I think I would go for Taranis.

Anyway - my models fly very nicely on the 9XR as they did on my 9X.

You'll LOVE this then... Having 5 since they all look alike, we got the colored Futaba sticks. They fit right on.

So you have like $2-5 options for changing the sticks. Maybe not tension, but the sticks.

My radio is the Taranis. I like it, but the real trick is to find the right version of software so I can give planes and helis to my kids... (IE: My plane in the Taranis, later becomes my daughter's plane... so I copy it literally from Taranis to computer to her 9XR.)

I like the 9XR as well as my Taranis though. It does have a sturdier and more original 9X feel to it. Seems little more precise with the gimbals.

Oh yeah... one more thing.

Having flown 3D profiles a lot, (some scratchbuilt... some HK Kits... and more recently some Twisted Hobbys and expensive options...) I can tell you what I see as the difference.

It is one simple quality. Coupling. There is virtually no coupling in the Twisted Hobbys plane. This means that if you are going full speed, and hit full right rudder, you either turn right (low rates) or "spin out" like a car that hit grease in a turn. With no coupling you can sit there and do doughnuts until you want to come down. If you fly level and hit full right aileron, you roll (like a perfect football spiral.) and still fly level. Knife edge stays balanced, for the most part, even when you are "steering around" with the elevator. Fly the plane level, then flip it inverted and essentially be flying the same plane. Lastly if you do an elevator and then punch the throttle and back right off, you do a near perfect waterfall.

In my other profiles, there may be a twitch or two in a roll or hard rudder turn. You need to balance the knife edge with ailerons. Steering in Knife Edge is difficult. Waterfalls are wobbly and unstable. Inverted is usually fine but "handles different"

In my Home-Made ones... Forget Knife edge. Waterfall becomes a "rolling harrier flip". Just DONT do inverted...

I'm sure it is balance, and I am also sure that it is correctable by dialing in the corrections as mixes. End result will be that you can make any of those fly like a Twisted Hobbys through a radio mix to undo any coupling you have. (and you're supposed to do that anyway in setting up for 3D) The real difference in the end is what those mixes may be.

T.H> Extra final mix for ailerons to rudder for KE flight = +/- 2%
Normal models... > Final may be +/- 10% in each mix.
My "Eyeball" scratchbuilds... > Final probably would be +/- 20 maybe even 25%, but have to mix that in to DECREASE with throttle increase...

End result of all of those would be planes that fly basically exactly the same. (IE: Zero coupling at doing anything, at virtually any speed.)

Heck Nigel, I hope this helps you out. I was very curious about why these are so much better myself, so we got one, and that's why. That's the difference as best I can tell, and just know you can tune any plane to fly like that, but those expensive kits should not have coupling out of the box. If you have RF7 try the crack yak on it. Zero coupling, that is the target you want to hit in the air with a 3D setup.

Just ha a brilliant 2 batterys worth quickie session front of my house ... well a short 2 min walk across road ...

Sun going down ... and wind drops away of course. We are a coastal town - so we have the early morning / early evening calms usually.

Magic ... the 2830 and 11x5.5 has really made her nice ...

Video to come.

Video for 24th with 2830 / 11x5.5 combo ..

Too much wind though.

And today 25th ... today was really silly wind but decided to give it a go.

Ended up stripping a servo gear and snapping the prop adaptor. Quick fixes ... ready to go again.

The model is actually far better and enjoyable to fly than I expected. As a sport aerobatic, its awesome. So even if you have no intention of 3D ... its good for stunts.
