Default led light strips and carbon fiber, easy short circuit!

i have to share this with everyone who is doing carbonfiber quad building and adding led light to assist in LOS flights.

i added the home made light bar underneath the quad using strips of balsa to make a frame and stuck the strip led lights on it so i had green in front and red in back. this was nice but i was still having issue at a distance telling front to back and orientation could be very difficult. the balsa was to keep the lights separate from the carbonfiber plates.

so i made a light bar using carbon fiber rod and stuck the sticky side of the led lights to it. then i hot glued a dji type headlight of leds to the center. it was perfect for both orientation and night flying. as you may be able to see in the pictures, the motor that over heated and the alum spacer rod that got hot were the same side where the light bar led copper was making contact with the carbon fiber arm of the quad.

i plan on isolating the led strip using a plastic stip instead of carbon fiber and also make sure the led copper side makes no contact to the frame and test it out again. i am glad there wasn't any smoking parts and am hoping the motor is still ok. will know later when the rain stops. the fact that this short didn't stop the quad from flying is a mystery.

Yep... Carbon brushes used in brushed motors should have been a hint.

lol. so true, they say the bird isn't true carbon fiber, but a plastic mix. i had tested the conductivity of the xbird and knew it was conductive. when i was flying friday i must have pushed the light led strip to touch the quads arm on the underside. best news is i fixed it easy and test flew it again in my back yard.

0 heat and no burnt smell coming from motor #1 that got hot enough to barly touch. the alum spacer piece was to hot to touch. i just may tear this quad apart, but for now flying it is to much fun

Just add some heat shrink tube or electrical tape and it'll be fine.
