Default 9303 and DX6i program problems.

Ok all you JR experts here's a problem that has me so frustrated I want to smash both of these into bits!

First things first, I'm not new and I reviewed both instruction manuals tonight and still can't fix this.

First issue

Bird: Easy star with DX6i installed, 3 channels (elev, rudder and throttle) all plugged into the correct channels in the RX and she flies just fine.

I have a 2.4 9303 that I want to use as a slave so I can work with my son on landing the Easy. Ok, no big deal right? WRONG!!!!

First problem is I can't for the life of me find the trainer programing in the 6i. Read the instructions and it says it can be the master or slave but thats it! If anyone knows the page number in the manual that tells you how to access this please let me know.

Second problem is when I hold the trainer switch the motor starts and runs at a very low throttle setting and will not shut off. I have control from that point all the way to WOT on the 9303 but I can't get it to shut off. Here is what I have tried to do to correct this.

Throttle trim all the way down on both radios
Throttle curve adjustments
Throttle reverse
Servo travel adjustment

None of these fix the problem. I think it may have something to do with the first problem. If I don't have control of the throttle channel maybe it's going into failsafe? Doubt it.

Third problem is both controls are reversed when the 9303 has the controls. Ok, no big deal right? Yes of course it is! Reversing both channels on the 9303 does nothing!

Ok guys, let's see how dumb I am. Fix this issue then well go into the problem on my Fun Jet using the 6i as a slave.

You have different systems but when I got my 662 to use as a trainer for my 6102 and I looked it up in the respective manuals there was essentially nothing. JR info in my estimation is sorely lacking though the product seems good.

See if this works for you.
EITHER unit can be the master, BUT whatever is the RX in the plane THAT defines which will me master. The master must control the TRANSMISSION signal to the RX. The slave must be set up independently to have the proper settings to run the plane even if it's on a different channel (or frequency in this case).

The Master is turned ON and TRANSMITS the signal. The Slave is OFF (switch), the control core comes on when the buddy line is plugged in, but the transmitter DOES NOT. DO NOT TURN ON THE SLAVE. Turning on the slave turns on the transmission part and screws it up.

When the Master "buddy button/toggle" is pressed/flipped (whatever yours does) and they are connected with the proper cord (mono audio cable) it transmits the control information from the slave. Release the button and it takes over total control of the plane again.

So, if the ES is set up with the DX6i bound to the RX then the 9303 must be OFF, plugged in via buddy cable, and the buddy button on the DX6i (turned ON) must be activated for the 9303 to work right. I think you do nothing with the trainer button on the 9303. There are some advanced functions available I think but for basic stuff (including aileron) this is working for me. I can change the D/R, EXPO, control limits, etc in the Slave unit and those signals are valid when it is working. My Master box is set up with somewhat more aggressive throws but the basic controls are the same.

That's how it works for me. I had to get it from the groups. JR manuals and web site were of no value at all. Pretty damn poor for a very useful function.

Thanks for the reply and yes your correct the manual sucks with the 6i. Everything your discribing I have done correctly and still have the problem of reversed rudder and elevator. I know that the slave must be setup like the master for all controls but reversing both channels doesn't correct the problem. I can't reverse the controls on the master because the bird would crash. See my problem? The throttle staying on is another issue I need to figure out.

Yes, see your problem. Not at all sure what to make of that issue. 9303 should be able to be set up independently and the controls reversed I would think. Not sure at all what to make of the throttle issue.

Maybe you can find something in this article?

Looks like a lot of different ways to set up the 9303. Maybe something is set up "wrong"

You might consider binding the ES to the 9303, get that right on a model channel, binding it back to the DX and see if it works right as a buddy box system now. Only thing I can think of right now.

The plot thickens!

So tonight I bound the Easy to the 9303 and got all the channels working the correct way. The only one that was wrong was the throttle.

I then rebound it to the 6i, plugged the cord into the back then into the 9303 which was off. I still have all the same issues!! Holding the trainer switch on the 6i makes the motor come on and the control surfaces are reversed. Changing the settings on the 9303 doesn't do anything.

So any help or should I call Horizon tomorrow? This is really frustrating.

I can't imagine that they aren't going to work together because this is the exact scenario you would expect to see with a student learning to fly. Guy wants to get into the hobby so he buys a good starter radio (6i) and the instructor who has been flying for a while has the good stuff (9303). I know you would expect to have the instructor on the 9303 but it should still work.

I've run out of suggestions. That would be frustrating. The scenario is much like you say, student on a starter TX, teacher on a more advanced unit.

If you do get some help or figure it out I'd certainly be interested. Got a buddy with a DX6i that still has issues and I've considered hooking him up to my 6102 except that his planes are the 'Master' and I'd be the slave unless we swap out RX's. I've already done that with another guy I'm helping.

Good luck.

I would say the same thing... Put the Master on the better TX, then see if you can get the dx6i to work as slave, that means after you turn on the 9303 and connect the power to your bird, try and plug the dx6i in (keep Dx6i tx power off) then press trainer button on left side of 9303 to use trainer... also 9303 you must hold the button the whole time you want the other tx to be able to control....

I know it will work in that configuration but that's not what I want.

The binding of the receiver to the TX makes things more difficult.

I want to be able to keep the RX bound to the 6i and use the 9303 as a slave when teaching my son. He's good enough to take off and fly by himself but he still needs work landing here in HI because of the wind.

I called Horizon and am waiting a call back. Well see if they can fix it.
