Default No I'm not going stupid - serious question - Heli motors ?

I have a couple of heli motors laying around ...

I have an F16 that is sorely in need of more thrust ...

Heli motors are Westor 3700kv ... 450 Heli type at 28mm OD ...

similar to this : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/brushless-...item3f143a20d7

F16 has the recc'd 2800kv and 6 blade 70mm fan with 28mm max motor mount ...

The question is ... would this Heli motor be suitable for fitting to the F16 ?

I realise that amp draw will be higher ... but will it work ?

Another question - what other motor could be fitted instead of the 2800kv ... preferably from an International Seller as I don't live in USA.

Thats a pretty big jump in kV, so the major problem, as you said, will be the extra amp draw.

What is your amp draw with the motor you have now and what is that new motor rated for? How many cells are you running now? If its a high enough cell count, you might be able to drop a cell and still get a power boost.

As far as what other motor would fit - most 28mm motors have the same mounting pattern, so its mainly a matter of choosing a kV and appropriate amp rating.

Here's the figures as I bench tested :

Model Weight : 955gr, (33.7oz),
LiPo 4S 3000 : 295gr, (10,4oz)
Complete weight to fly : 1250gr, (44.1oz)
Measured thrust : 700gr, (24.7oz) ... 4S 3000 25-50C Nanotech
Second test with different LiPo : 800gr, (28.2oz) ... EVO 4S 3000 20C
Amps : 36A
Watts : 490W
Volts : 14.2V

As you can see I am only getting a thrust ratio between 0.56 and 0.64 to 1.

The LiPo's are as supplied with the model when my pal bought it. He crashed it, no surprise really as it was struggling to stay in the air. It was given me as a freebie to rebuild and see if I can get her to fly.
I have 5S LiPo on the way to test ... but I'm concerned about the motor as it only has one small air hole at rear of the bullet casing. It will rely on air passing over the motor instead of like most through ... The motor is also rated as 4S max ... I'm hoping that manufacturer is playing safe with that spec.

So my though was to consider my spare Westor 450 Heli motor ... I expect she would climb to maybe 50A draw ... which she survived as my record breaker Parkjet motor ...

Just getting fed up looking at the 16 and not flying it !!

Nigel, might be of help, something that borders on your set up. It's what a lot of us did with the Eflite Super Airliner to get more out of it.

Horizon took a 64mm 6 blade fan unit, but removed 3 of the blades from the fans.
One of the tricks we did was up the stock motors kv to I think it was a 3800 or 3900 kv motor, and then go up from 3S to 4S on them.

Kept the amps around 35 or so per motor, and pepped up the old girl.

Interesting - I did think about swapping out the fan for a lesser blade job and up the kv.
It's what got me thinking about my heli motor - being 3700kv.

I think what I need is a good motor about 3000kv, a good 5S battery !!

I have a feeling that after using the existing 4S that was donated with his model to me .. I tried the nanotech in my 64mm T45 ... it was rubbish ... so I might be victim of poor battery as well.

There's nothing bizarre about using a heli motor in an EDF. The Align 430L heli outrunner was used some years ago, before the purpose designed EDF outrunners caught on. I have one in a bizarre airframe however. The plane is powered by a 3550kv Align 430L in a GWS EDF75 on 3s. In a conventional EDF airframe that uses the fan, such as the GWS Skyhawk, I believe it would perform quite well. Just being flyable with a bit of speed in this setup, is all I could ask for.

IMHO I think the 3700KV motor with a 3 blade fan on 4 cells will be Awesome but check it with a wattmeter to be on the safe side, I have run 5700KV motors on a 64mm EDF with 3 and 4 cells, with 5700KVs, these motors just become a Heater and drain the battery real quick with out any extra power being gained

Interesting you say 3 blade ... I was thinking more 4 blade ...

I have 5S packs on way to me on present set-up ....... will see what happens then maybe take the knife to the duct ... cut out the EDF unit and install different set-up.
